American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

The AAPG Asia Pacific Region is proud to announce our Top Three teams for our 2021 IBA competition.

The last few months must have been exciting for all the participating schools. We hope you have all benefitted from this program.

We completed our IBA2021 competition on 26 February; with 7 participating schools. We had a couple of last minute withdrawals. The judges watched the live presentations as well as the Zoom recordings and have ultimately selected a Winner

There were some very close scores. Teams were evaluated on multiple aspects including integrated petroleum systems analysis, basic technical interpretations, regional context, team work, etc. We would like to now to congratulate the University of Karachi from Pakistan for emerging as the best team overall. They will now represent the Asia Pacific Region at the IBA 2021 Finals (Virtual). Well, done, University of Karachi!

We wish the best of luck in the Finals.

Second Place: Institute Technologi Bandung, Indonesia. Well Done!

AAPG IBA 2rd place semifinal team for Asia Pacific Region 2021

Third Place: Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. Well Done!

AAPG IBA 3rd place semifinal team for Asia Pacific Region 2021

Congratulations to all these three Schools for your very strong effort. The Judges were pleased with your presentation and findings.

For all our other participating teams, the Judges were very pleased to see the fine efforts that were made, even with Covid-19 lockdowns. We are proud of all of you. Do not be discouraged, as your technical studies have been commended by each of the judges. We think all of you are winners, having dedicated your time and effort to this competition. We hope that the exposure you have gained will stand you in good stead for the future.

We will be circulating the judges’ comments to the Teams; except for the Winning Team, who will receive feedback after the USA Finals (per the rules).

Meanwhile, your slide presentation is to be kept confidential to your own school even though you may be requested by other competing schools or organisations to share it. The datasets given to you are proprietary so please do not share.

We will not be circulating any presentations to any team either.

Our thanks go to our Judges for dedicating their time to be present at this competition. To our Head Judge Paulus Tangke Allo of Equinor Indonesia, Judges Ritesh Joshi of Oil India, Rob Seggie, Retired Geologist from Australia, and our support Judges Mark Tingay, AAPG Asia Region President and Mick McWalter, AAPG Asia Pacific Immediate Past President, we hope you enjoyed your stint. We are deeply appreciative of your time, your effort and your providing advice to the students.

Last but not least, to 2021 Region Coordinator Grandika Primadani of BEICIP Franlab Asia, Malaysia, and Volunteer Angela Deng of Shell Sabah, Malaysia, thank you for all your cooperation and help!
