AAPG Asia Pacific Presents is a collection of online talks being offered free of charge. We apply a modified Bowers Method to analyze the contribution of loading and unloading to total overpressure magnitude in the shelfal area of the Lower Kutai Basin. The method combines Bowers Method with density-sonic cross plots to differentiate contributors to overpressure. This method has a strong physical background, and has proven to give satisfactory overpressure estimation in the study area. Several processes related to overpressure and compaction in the study area have also been deduced: 1) top of overpressure is caused by unloading due to gas generation, 2) gas generation on its own can produce overburden-scale overpressure magnitude, 3) loading starts to contribute to overpressure at depth, where the lithology is dominated by mudrocks, 4) effective stress history experienced by mudrocks before unloading, and 5) the presence of two compaction lines and therefore two associated velocity-effective stress relations. Our analysis resolves a long debate (for more than 25 years) related to generating mechanism of overpressure in the study area.

Agus M. Ramdhan is a lecturer at the Department of Geology, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). He received a scholarship from Total E&P Indonesie (TEPI) to pursue his PhD study at Durham University, UK. He is an active member of IAGI (Indonesian Association of Geologist) and EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers). At ITB, he teaches Geopressure, Hydrodynamics of Oil and Gas, Hydrogeology, and Computational Geology courses. He also routinely gives overpressure workshop for several petroleum-earth science-related professional associations as well as in-house training for several oil and gas companies in Indonesia. He maintains his overpressure research by actively publishing his research in scientific journals as well as by presenting it in scientific meeting. In 2016, Agus was awarded Norman Falcon Award from EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) for the best paper in Petroleum Geoscience Journal published in 2015.

Oil price and cost estimates are important inputs into reserves and resources assessments. How do changes to oil price impact reserves assessments? The impact will depend on various factors such that a fall in oil price may increase, decrease or have no impact on reserves. Oil prices and forecasts are used differently within common classification systems such as PRMS and SEC.
Key definitions, such as the terms “economic”, “economic limit” and “commercial” will be explained in the context of the PRMS. Other issues such as the derivation of oil prices forecasts will also be discussed.
This presentation will outline how changes in oil price impact reserves in theory and with practical industry examples.

Doug Peacock is a Technical Director with GaffneyCline, based in Singapore. He holds a B.Sc. in Geological Sciences from Leeds University, UK, and a M.Sc. in Petroleum Geology from Imperial College, London.
He has over 35 years’ experience in the oil industry in a variety of geoscience positions, during employment with service companies, operators and consultancies. He has been involved in integrated applications, 3-D modelling, unitisation, and reserves assessments throughout his career.
He was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2010-2011 and a recent member of the SPE Oil and Gas Reserves Committee (OGRC). Doug has written many technical papers and also presented many training courses mainly on reserves assessment on behalf of the SPE.

This talk will identify key parameters controlling pressure regimes, trap sealing at the level of both the basin and the prospect, as well as areas of uncertainty. Listeners will understand and become more familiar with the current approaches and have tools regarding data collection, processing pressure data and evaluating traps and cap rocks. They will also be able to apply concepts relating to fluid dynamics and trap sealing in their approach to exploration (upstream operations and decision making). The talk will allow them to gain or improve skills in fluid geology.
