Presented by Bruce Ainsworth, Principal Reservoir Geoscientist, Chevron Australia

Sequence stratigraphy based on wireline logs, cores and outcrops is entering its fourth decade of mainstream usage in industry and academia. The technique has proved to be an invaluable tool for improving stratigraphic analyses in clastic shallow marine systems. In this talk we will present a simple quantitative technique to support sequence stratigraphic interpretations. The technique utilizes two pieces of data that are readily available from every subsurface field or outcrop study; parasequence thickness (T) and parasequence sandstone fraction (SF).

Bruce Ainsworth is a Principal Reservoir Geoscientist with Chevron Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Australian School of Petroleum & Energy Resoures, University of Adelaide. He has a B.Sc. from Imperial College, London, an M.Sc. from McMaster University, Canada, and a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool, UK. His 31 years of industry experience have been evenly split between applied research and industry operating roles with Shell, the University of Adelaide and Chevron. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers on various aspects of petroleum geoscience and has geological work experience in fifteen different countries across six continents.

AAPG Association Matters: The Career Value of AAPG and Unsolicited Advice

Presented by Gretchen Gillis, Geological Consultant, Aramco Americas

AAPG advances the science of geology, promotes related technology, fosters the spirit of scientific research, disseminates science, inspires high standards of professional conduct, and advances the professional well-being of its members. These core purposes are as important now as they were when AAPG formed in 1917. AAPG is a mainstay of my career because of the geoscientific knowledge, networking, education, and training I have received in more 20 years of actively volunteering and from passively consuming AAPG publications earlier in my career. Recent reflection revealed my actual career drivers that have been assuaged by timely career pivots. These career pivots have provided opportunities for building skills and knowledge, and for gaining appreciation for the value of diversity and inclusion in geoscience.

Gretchen Gillis is Geological Consultant at Aramco Americas in Houston, where she supports oil and gas exploration and production and provides training in petroleum geoscience and scientific writing for Saudi Aramco. She began her career as an exploration geologist and later served in a variety of marketing communication roles with Schlumberger. Gretchen was recently elected AAPG 2020-21 President-Elect. Gretchen earned a bachelor's degree in geology from Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, USA, and a master's degree in geological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.
