On 26 May 2016, the AAPG Young Professionals Chapter Kuala Lumpur organized a technical talk entitled “Bluffer’s guide to exploration in South East Asia”.  We were grateful to have the speaker Mr Ian Longley from GIS-PAX  volunteer his time in KL.

It was a good response of 20 young professionals and students attending the talk, held at the PETRONAS office on level 16 of the KLCC Tower 2.  Before the talk started at 5.30pm, a brief introduction of the main mission of AAPG KL YP chapter was given.  The AAPG KL YP chapter will host monthly events and participants were strongly encouraged to take part in these events.

Ian started off his talk by going through the different models that explains the evolution of South China Sea tectonics. He started off by comparing Prof Paul Tapponier’s extrusion model and Prof Robert Hall’s model.   He also highlighted the major discoveries made in South East Asia in recent years.

Ian spent the 2nd half of his talk on guiding the young professionals and students on how to survive in the corporate world. He also offered advice on different aspects of the industry from dealing with safety to managing the boss. It was certainly a fruitful learning experience for the young professionals and students as they got to benefit from his 30 years’ experience in the industry.  Moreover, it was a fantastic talk by Ian Longley as his talks are always enriching and hilarious!

The talk ended with an enthusiastic Q&A session which went on for 20 minutes.  Ian stayed on to answer questions from each attendee before he finally left. It was a good turnout by the young professionals and the university students.
