Black Belt Ethics Lecture by Mr Bob Shoup for University of Malaya

The University of Malaya AAPG Student Chapter in collaboration with EAGE Student Chapter University of Malaya organized a Black Belt Ethics Lecture by Mr. Bob Shoup on 12 January 2016. Mr. Shoup is the current Chair, House of Delegates, for AAPG. He previously joined the student chapter in our recent forum entitled “The Reality in the Downturn Industry" as one of the panelists with officials from from ConocoPhillips, PETRONAS, and Repsol.

Black Belt Ethics is a course whereby the code of honor in martial arts such as discipline, honor, integrity and perseverance are used as guidance for our personal and professional lives. This course was developed by Mr. Shoup. He started the lecture by giving an overview of the current oil price and how it affects the job availability for fresh graduates, and also provided some suggestions on how to survive in times of low oil price. He emphasized the importance of having a backup plan if plan A doesn't work.

Mr. Shoup showed current statistics of AAPG members by age distribution. He also stressed the importance of being an active member after graduation so we can keep contributing to the association and its future members.

Next, Mr. Shoup stressed the responsibility we have on our own career. To achieve the target that we have set on our career, the Black Belt Ethics must be applied into our daily practice.

The Black Belt Ethics is an easy framework as that it guides us by following the stage of belt colors in Tae Kwon Do. Each belt color holds a different code of values. Mr. Shoup provided some interesting and motivating quotes and ended his lecture by stressing the importance of giving back to the community. With this, we can achieve the black belt in ethics.

This lecture was attended by undergraduates, postgraduates, lecturers and as well as committee of SPE Student Chapter of University of Malaya.
