The Remaining Hydrocarbon Potential in Southern African Offshore Basins GTW took place from 11-13 April 2022 at the Westin Cape Town Hotel and attracted 87 attendees from 28 different companies and 6 different countries.

The GTW opening, which took place on the 11 April morning, featured an opening address by Phindile Masangane, CEO at Petroleum Agency SA followed by two keynotes delivered by Ntokozo Ngcwabe, Deputy Director General: Policy, Global Relations and Investment Promotion at DMRE, South Africa and Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice President, Exploration at TotalEnergies. The opening concluded with a technical keynote on South Africa’s three super basins presented by Neil Hodgson, VP Geoscience at Searcher Geodata.

This two and half day-workshop also included 19 technical talks covering the following topics:

  1. New Exploration Opportunities and Recent Advances in Southern African Offshore Basins
  2. Exploring New Plays in a Challenging Environment
  3. Worldwide Analogues to Better Understand the Deep Water of Southern African Basins
  4. Infrastructure and Upstream Development Potential
  5. Legislative Challenges, Local Content and Capacity Development

Poster presentations were one of the main pillars of the workshop; we had eleven poster presenters sharing their research and findings with the rest of GTW attendees.

The event provided a broad platform for presenting and discussing the understanding of the petroleum geology of Southern African Offshore Basins in Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Angola and others, encompassing themes associated with its plays and reservoirs while being an opportunity for academia and industry players in the region to help establish Southern Africa as a vibrant and emerging prolific petroleum hub.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our most sincere gratitude to the committee members for their hard work and support. We would also like to thank our Platinum Sponsor, Strategic Fuel Fund, for their generous contribution as well as TotalEnergies for being the Coffee Break Sponsor and Petroleum Agency SA as the Workshop Abstract Sponsor. And last but not least, thanks to all the presenters and attendees for their and commitment and for making this event possible. We look forward to a second edition!
