South Africa has hit the headlines recently with two major discoveries in deep water off the south coast, by Total and partners CNR, Qatar Petroleum and Mainstreet. Both prospects, Brulpadda and Luiperdpadda, drilled in deep water on the Aptian basin floor fan Paddavissie play, discovered significant accumulations of gas condensate and some oil. There are three remaining prospects in the Paddavissie play and a similar play named Kloofpadda, has been revealed by new seismic data to the east.

It is against this background, of two new major discoveries, opening up a world-class deep water play in the southern Outeniqua Basin, that South Africa is developing new stand-alone upstream legislation, to separate oil and gas out of the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act. The enactment of the new Upstream Petroleum Resources Management Bill will bring changes in South Africa’s licensing system that will ensure more equitable access to exploration acreage and better management of the exploration cycle.

The talks presented in this showcase will detail these developments as well as examine deep water and other prospectivity in other basins of South Africa, as the country prepares for the release of acreage under the new act.
