Casing damages have been found in many stimulated wells worldwide. While other mechanisms such as mechanical, thermal, and chemical can be responsible, this talk will focus on and clarify geomechanical contributions during and after hydraulic fracturing. Through case studies, key contributors to casing integrity are evaluated with varying casing properties, pipe eccentricities, cement channels, borehole breakouts, injection pressures, as well as different loading mechanics such as compression, shear, or combined. Dynamic rock changes induced by stimulation are quantified and compared to the threshold triggering casing damage.

Bio
Dr. Gang Han works at the Upstream Technology Coordination of Aramco Americas. With 20+ years of experience in rock mechanics and geomechanics, he focuses on the technologies related to hydraulic fracturing, well planning and construction, reservoir performance, and well productivity. Prior to joining Aramco, Dr. Han worked offshore, continental, and unconventional oil and gas fields from Middle East, Gulf of Mexico, continental USA, North Sea, Southeast and East Asia, Australia, North and West Africa, and South America.
He is the Vice President and an Executive Committee member of American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA). As the chair of ARMA Technical Committee on Hydraulic Fracturing, he is the founder and the chair of the Hydraulic Fracturing Community, with over 900 professionals representing 324 global organizations. He has been the geomechanics chairs at Unconventional Resources Technology Conference since 2013. With over 50 publications in geomechanics, he is regularly invited to give keynotes at professional meetings and societies such as URTeC, ARMA, SPE, AAPG, and SEG. He is a leading author of a multi-industry book, Drilling in Extreme Environments - Penetration and Sampling on Earth and Other Planets. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
