Understanding, untapping, and utilizing the storage capacity in the subsurface will be pivotal to successfully achieving an orderly energy transition. The subsurface provides energy storage solutions that guarantee the availability of resources when needed. Pore space in the subsurface, as permanent storage for captured anthropogenic CO2, plays a vital role among the decarbonization tools required to achieve the Paris Agreement objectives. In this panel, we analyze these applications' technical and economic maturity with a particular interest in CCS and Gas / Hydrogen Geological Storage. Our panelists will discuss the associated risks, social acceptance, and overall barriers to deploying this resource at scale.
