Location: In-Person – Colorado Convention Center (Speakers presenting in-person and online)

Denver: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Monday 27 September
Chengdu: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Tuesday 28 September

China’s fast-growing demand in energy and massive infrastructure modernization require active engagement of applied geophysics. The session will focus on the critical challenges and opportunities in (1) oil and gas business in China, such as exploration and development projects in challenging complex structures with complicated near-surface geology for both conventional and unconventional resources, and (2) smart city development for intelligent infrastructure design and mitigation of natural disasters. The business and employment opportunities as well as government policies regarding the above two topics will be the focus of the panel discussion. The session will serve as a platform for idea exchange between China and western organizations. We welcome all geoscience and engineering professionals and business leaders to benefit the panel discussion.

Each panelist will present a keynote for 5-10 minutes using a PowerPoint presentation and followed a question-and-answer session. The presentation can be a position or outlook statement on the business of geosciences of each panelist or its organization.

Both sessions in Chengdu and Denver will be carried out in a hybrid format, i.e., an in-person and remote presentations, which will be live streaming to Denver Convention Center, China, and worldwide.

Klaas Koster
Worldwide Chief Geophysicist, Occidental Oil and Gas Corporation
Impact of Modern Seismic Technology on Exploration and Field Development

Klaas Koster is the Worldwide Chief Geophysicist at Occidental. In this role, he oversees the entire international geophysical function and directs Oxy’s team of geophysical experts in acquisition, processing, and quantitative interpretation.

Klaas brings three decades of technical and management experience to his current role. Before joining Occidental in 2016, Klaas was the Forties Development Manager at Apache and later went on to build Murphy’s technical subsurface capabilities. Klaas started his career as an acquisition and processing geophysicist in 1989 at Amoco’s research center in Tulsa followed by a stint in their mid-continent business unit out of Denver. He was with Shell for 15 years as a quantitative interpretation geophysicist and time-lapse seismic specialist in The Hague, Stavanger, Perth and New Orleans offices.

Klaas holds a Doctorate in Applied Geophysics from Delft University and is the President-Elect for GSH, a past-president of both SEG and ASEG, and a life member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Jishan He
Professor and Academician, Chinese University of Hong Kong
Wide Field Electromagnetic Method and It's Applications

He Jishan, geophysicist, engineering management scientist, academician of Chinese Academy of engineering, pioneer of electromagnetic exploration in China. He Jishan has been engaged in higher education and scientific research for 60 years and has established an international leading electromagnetic exploration method and technology system including theory, method, technology, equipment and application, China's electromagnetic exploration has made great strides from introducing and applying, following and learning to leading the world. It has become a "Chinese model" for geophysical exploration. The achievements have been widely used in the exploration of oil, natural gas, coal and metal mineral resources, as well as in the investigation of engineering geological conditions and hidden dangers, which has made great contributions to the protection of energy security, resource security and people's life and property safety in China.

The China School of electromagnetic exploration led by He Jishan has led the frontier of International Geophysics. Professor H. F. Morrison, a famous American geophysicist, wrote: “Professor He is recognized worldwide for his many accomplishments in exploration geophysics and particular for his outstanding work in induced polarization and controlled source audio magnetotellurics.” According to Zhdanov of the University of Utah, also a famous geophysicist, "the most impressive thing about professor He is that he is not only committed to solving the theoretical problems, but also has made outstanding contributions in the field of detection technology and equipment, which is rare in the world.".

He Jishan is a good example. He is still working in teaching and scientific research in his eighties and continues to contribute to the implementation of China's deep exploration strategy and new energy strategy. The research results and academic thoughts are of great significance to the development of Geophysics and Engineering Management in China.

He Jishan had won 1 National Science Conference Award; 3 National Technological Invention Awards, 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 1 The Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award; He was elected the first batch of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994; He successively won the honors of national advanced worker and national model teacher.
