Women are underrepresented in STEM occupations across the world. Specifically, geoscience data published by AGI and NSF (2010-2017) shows the percentage of women with geoscience degrees working as geoscientists decreased from 17% to 11%. This percentage is approximately half that of men with geoscience degrees working as geoscientists. In AAPG, representation of women relative to the total membership from 2014-2020 shows a slight increase but hovering around 20%, which is lower than membership rates in similar associations like GSA (35%) and AGU (32%).

Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of women scientists who are changing the face of science in the United States and around the world. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist, lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences. Using research techniques and careful data collection, these women are not only contributing to our understanding of what limits women scientists but advocating and providing new perspectives on how to make the future of science more diverse, equitable and inclusive for all.
