Increasing unconventional oil and gas production has been accompanied by increasing rates of seismicity in many basins. Some of this seismicity can be related to hydraulic fracturing operations, reservoir depletion and associated changes in stress state, or disposal of hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water. Understanding the causal mechanisms of induced seismicity requires an integrated geological modeling approach to address questions concerning the dominant physical processes causing earthquakes and how they are related to operational activities. In this seminar, researchers from the Center for Integrated Seismicity Research and the TexNet Earthquake Monitoring Network will present recent geological research on the Delaware Basin of west Texas and southeast New Mexico. Topics covered will include earthquake sequences in the basin, spatiotemporal trends in production and disposal, geomodeling of saltwater disposal intervals, unconventional velocity modeling for more accurate earthquake locations, and characterization of faults and integration with earthquake data to identify potentially seismogenic faults.
