Gas hydrate field production tests, laboratory studies, and computer modeling have documented the fact that gas hydrates hosted in sand-rich, conventional reservoirs systems, can occur at high concentrations and can be produced with conventional hydrocarbon production technologies.

Because my term expires at the end of June, I want take a moment upfront to express my gratitude to the EMD Executive and Leadership Committees for their enthusiastic support and willingness to volunteer their valuable time to work with me during the past year. Your continued efforts are recognized and appreciated by many in AAPG. President Denise Cox expressed to me that she views EMD as the most important Division that will help insure AAPG’s future success as our Association keeps pace with a sustainable energy future. EMD will serve an important role in attracting new members to AAPG who are interested in alternate (non-petroleum) energy resources, and critical minerals required to support the transition to renewable energy sources. This view does not diminish the importance of the unconventional oil & gas resources represented by EMD, which will continue as a necessary component to meet the world’s increasing energy demand well into the future.

Tuesday May 21, 2019 7:15 pm – 9 pm Room 214 A in the San Antonio Convention Center. It is on the Meeting Room level of the convention center. This year we are focusing on how much petroleum comes from come from outside the landing zone / reservoir (and the implications for inventory, spacing, etc.). The first three talks address this issue as well as the problems associated with geochemical techniques that attempt to quantify out-of-zone flow. Alton Brown will follow with a talk that builds on last year’s conversation about pressure generation during petroleum generation and explusion.

Interest in geothermal energy has been growing recently as one of the non-carbon geologic energy resource types envisioned for a sustainable energy future. Geothermal energy is unique among the unconventional and alternate energy resources represented by EMD in that it is a considered a naturally replenishing or renewable energy source.

Welcome to the first issue of the 2018-19 EMD Newsletter. The last EMD Newsletter was published in 2010 when it was decided to try a new format to distribute information through the modernized EMD website and quarterly email blasts. The website is now well established as a resource documenting EMD’s activities and reports, however the frequency of regular email communications since 2010 has been sporadic. The purpose of reinstituting the newsletter is to help improve member engagement by formalizing a standardized format for the quarterly email blasts.
