Producers are feeling the pinch: they’ve got to drill ever more wells to stay ahead of their production declines. Increased production is weighing on crude oil prices – you get the benefit of this supply in resilient markets, but it is shrinking margins and available cashflow to fund this drilling. And at the same time, the financial community is pulling back, restricting access to capital. The industry is reshaping itself yet again in response to new market realities, looking for new ideas and better approaches and operating models.

Most contributions to the exploration community that get attention in articles and conventions concern the essential technical issues: petroleum geology, prospect/play risk analysis and volume expectation, economics, etc. However, once the prospect has been evaluated and the project is validated

As the global energy sector gains momentum and companies enter licensing rounds, the need for quick access to data holds fundamental importance. Increasingly, operators large and small are turning to multiclient companies who have the information and images that help them make decisions about entering a new area.

“Undoubtedly, yes, the world must accelerate its transition to renewable energy. Cost is no longer a major barrier for renewables.” That’s Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, chairman of the United Nations Global Compact Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding what it calls “lasting solutions” to the world’s pressing global needs, including, for our purposes here, energy.

While many see the energy transition as the switch from carbon-based to non- carbon-based fuels, Scott Tinker sees a broader definition. Tinker, past AAPG president, director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Texas state geologist, suggested the goal of a successful transition is lifting some 2.5 billion people out of poverty by addressing energy poverty, as well as by minimizing environmental impacts.

Lower cost and lower carbon. That’s the energy future for which geoscientists need to start preparing now, according to Neal Anderson, president and CEO of Wood Mackenzie in Edinburgh, one of the world’s leading energy research and consulting firms.

I am currently on the first half of my lecture tour on ethics as you are reading this article. By the end of October, I will have traveled to four of the AAPG section meetings: Rocky Mountain, Mid-Continent, Eastern and the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies as the Division of Professional Affairs ethics lecturer. As the DPA section luncheon speaker, my plan is to also present this lecture at both the Pacific and Southwest section meetings next April. I am making this tour to connect with members across the country, and because of my strong belief that ethics form the core of professionalism and the bedrock of civilization.

One of the aspects I find fascinating about this industry is its incredible variety, and that’s not a word often used to describe a commodity business.

For a long time, executives and human resource professionals have discussed the challenges the oil and gas industry would face once baby boomers began to enter retirement age. So, when Stephanie Nwoko proposed the Mid-Career Special Session to the 2019 AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition Technical Planning Committee Co-Chair Lorena Moscardelli, it was wholly supported and approved to go ahead.
