The energy industry and its workers literally fuel the world, although people in the businesses of air or water might argue about which is preeminent. At a time when watchwords in the energy industry include uncertainty, transition, and sustainability; artificial intelligence can distort reality and might be coming for our jobs if not our lives; and the world is upset by war and unrest, it is no wonder that many geoscientists are anxious. Given the importance of energy, and the fact that the heart of science and industry is people, embracing our shared humanity throughout our geoscience careers seems essential.
