Diversification and greening of the energy sector is required more than ever to meet net-zero targets. A new portfolio of energy sources and storage is required but how will this look like in the future? Can renewables be sufficiently scaled up, whilst remaining economic? Can we continue to justify carbon capture and storage? This webinar will dive into these questions, plus more, and lay the foundation for further discussion at the Forum on 19th May.

"Energy Transition Forum Webinar" frames an aspirational vision for how geoscientists can drive impact on a truly global scale during the Energy Transition. Geoscientists today face a daunting, multi-faceted challenge of shifting to a net-zero energy future, supplying the energy the world needs today, and doing both while also shaping a fulfilling, long-term career. The time is now for the Geoscience community to step up and tackle these parallel challenges proactively. To do so, geoscientists need to bring entrepreneurial vision, discipline expertise, technological innovation, and deep integration. Experts in these four fields will share how they do this and discuss how geoscience can maximize its contribution to the energy of both today and tomorrow.

Cities around the world, and especially in densely populated regions like Asia, have the potential to be the most efficient form of human society. Maintaining sustainability in megacities is crucial to seeking a global sustainable solution for the limited space, water, and energy resources. Geophysics has the potential to provide essential knowledge for urban planning, urban activity monitoring, and urban circular economy. To fully release such potential, innovations are needed to integrate new and conventional sensors, as well as nondedicated sensors and open social information. Furthermore, both physics-based and data-driven methods are essential to delineating different sources for urban activity monitoring and urban space characterization. Bridging the gap between geophysics, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, digital informatics, and social economics provides the framework to guide project owners and local authorities to develop specific strategies for the sustainable development and management of urban environments.
