Fossil fuels have led to a profound increase in world living standards but resulting emissions of CO2 and methane into the atmosphere are a primary factor in climate change. Atmospheric content of CO2 and methane have risen 146% and 257% respectively since pre-industrial time and the rate of increase through 2019 has accelerated. If significant steps are not taken in the coming decade to halt the increase in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), a phase may be reached in the 2030-2050-time frame described as a “tipping point”, in which steady changes may be replaced by a large-scale change in the climate system. The Middle East is an area of high climate change vulnerability in the coming decades due to extreme temperatures, sea level rise and changing weather patterns.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become very popular for solving problems in seismic data processing. This involves the creation of a predictive model trained on labeled data. However, model outputs are as good as their training set. Poor quality training data results in poor performance of the AI model. Therefore, work by a geoscientist is critical for data preprocessing. This involves significant efforts in labeling the data and developing complex signal or image processing algorithms.

There are over 300 known active onshore mud volcanoes globally, and many more offshore. Mud volcanoes are subsurface fluid escape features in which high pore pressures drive fluids, gases, and subsurface sediments to the surface. This talk will summarize mud volcanoes around the world and examine mud volcano plumbing systems and their link to petroleum systems.

The “Great Crew Change” has become the “Competence Train Wreck” due to the repeated personal mis-management practices of our industry and again not anticipating the known volatility of commodity prices. Despite this, hydrocarbon based energy will continue to comprise over 60% of the world’s energy mix for at least the next half century and of that energy need over half of it has yet to be found! Personal experience in working for National Oil Companies, Parastatals, large independent oil companies, small independents, as an independent and as a consultant have given me the perspective of some of the best and some of the worst of the exploration practices the industry has to offer.

The ultimate aim of hydraulic fracturing treatments in horizontal wells is to increase the flow and conductivity of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs by creating a long fracture in the order of 100 to 1,000 ft and conductive fracture width in the order of a tenth of an inch. This presentation will focus on the use of recent advancements of fracturing fluids to characterized fractures created in hydraulically stimulated reservoirs, focusing on HVFRs.

Monday, 7 September Thursday, 10 September 2020, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

This event will showcase digital subsurface studies and workflows enabled by data science and delivered by a workforce equipped to handle next generation E&P. How digital transformation using subsurface data creates value in the oil and gas industry. As we constantly break new ground, the scope is broad but subsurface data should underpin your results. Data science makes some of its biggest discoveries by integrating many parts so the elements below represent the scope of the whole event and not individual sessions.

Economic oil and gas fields have been increasingly found in deep-water continental margins for the past decade, where potential prospects record the key tectonic events associated with plate breakup and continental drift. In these regions, the exploitation of economic resources must take into account sustainable practices and environmental concerns of local populations. This talk will present case studies from multiple continental margins to then extrapolate major findings to basins in SE Asia.

In the past 3 decades the sequence stratigraphy jargon has proliferated, resulting in multiple definitions of the same surface or new surfaces and units based on drawings of deposition in response to relative changes in sea level. The close association between base-level changes, the formation of surfaces, and specific stratal stacking that define systems tracts are at the heart of the confusion. This webinar is proposed a back-to-basics approach, emphasizing key observations that can be made from any geologic data: lithofacies, lithofacies association, vertical stacking, stratal geometries, and stratal terminations.
