Course Content

This field trip will take place in the Serranía de Cuenca region (east-central Spain) and focuses on the observation of two mid-Cretaceous outcrop sections (Pajaroncillo and Reíllo) that describe an along-strike relative position. Both outcrops are located in the Western Tethys palaeocoast of the Iberian Basin. Their sedimentary record shows a broad spectrum of coastal depositional environments that developed during the late Albian to earliest Cenomanian interval due to the mid-Cretaceous marine transgression.

The targeted outcrops comprise the siliciclastic strata of the Utrillas Group and its lateral shift of facies, the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate strata of the La Bicuerca Member (Aras de Alpuente Formation). The succession begins with braided alluvial deposits that evolve into a coastal succession and culminate in the marine carbonate platforms that dominated the Iberian Basin during the Late Cretaceous. The lateral distribution of the sedimentary systems along the palaeocoast was controlled by tectonics, generating two blocks and giving rise to differential subsidence and variability of sedimentary environments between the two outcrops.

This field trip will allow the attendant to gain an understanding of the sedimentology of ancient transgressive coastal successions controlled by an interplay of tectonics and eustatism in a unique environment. In particular, it will focus on explaining the vertical evolution of both outcrop sections in terms of sedimentary environments, sand-mud partitioning and how to run a stratigraphic correlation between outcrops using the principles of Sequence Stratigraphy as a tool.

Itinerary

Who Should Attend

Geoscientists interested in learning about ancient coastal siliciclastic sedimentary systems.

Objectives

To gain an understanding of ancient coastal sedimentary environments and their along-strike variabilities.

Notes:

Although the field trip will not be conducted on technical or steep ground, we recommend wearing proper hiking boots and trousers. Temperatures in this area of Spain during early November may typically range around 10 to 15 Celsius during the day. However, lower or higher temperatures may be possible due to the altitude. We recommend bringing a water/windproof jacket, sunscreen, a hat, and warm clothes (i.e., coat, gloves, scarf…).

Please Note: Transportation to and from the field trip starting point, UCM Facultad de Ciencias Geológicas, is not included in the price.

Pricing:
