“Deepwater reservoirs are all about flow – sediment gravity flows which transport the sediments and forms the reservoirs… ultimately determining the permeability and connectivity that controls the porous media flow of hydrocarbons and water”

Carlos Pirmez is currently the Technical Lead for Shell Colombia Exploration, searching for hydrocarbons in the Caribbean Basin. With over 25 years of industry and academic experience, Dr. Pirmez has authored and co-authored over 100 journal publications disseminating the art of deepwater systems and exploration.

Dr. Pirmez has worked for Shell since 2001, starting in R&D where he investigated sedimentary processes, reservoir architecture and reservoir modelling technologies, with applications to deepwater exploration and field development. Before joining the Colombia team, Dr. Pirmez worked in the Bonga field development in Shell Nigeria and in the development of the Val d’Agri and Tempa Rossa carbonate fields in Shell Italy.

Before his tenure at Shell, Dr. Pirmez was an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University and a geologist at ExxonMobil Upstream Reseach Company. Dr. Pirmez holds a bachelor’s degree in Oceanography from State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and a PhD in Marine Geology and Geophysics from Columbia University in the City of New York.
