Paul Wagner is currently the lead carbonate geologist for the Shell Group.

Wagner has worked in the petroleum industry since 1982 with Amoco, PGS, ExxonMobil and Shell. Assignments have included ones in the full range of E&P activities, from global exploration to enhanced oil recovery in unconventional reservoirs.

Individual Middle Eastern projects include:

  • Regional and field studies in the Khuff of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman.
  • Shuaiba studies in the UAE and Oman.
  • Most recently, Jurassic field studies in northern Kuwait.

He has a master’s degree and doctorate in carbonate geology, both from Brown University, Providence, R.I.

Statement for DL Tour:

Carbonate reservoirs represent about 20% of the worldwide number of oil and gas reservoirs. Because non-carbonate reservoirs numerically dominate the majority of basins, many Exploration and Production geologists have accumulated significant work experience in those reservoirs. However, they may have little or no experience with carbonate ones. When assessing carbonate reservoirs for the first time, geologists’ methods carried over from previous clastic work can produce erroneous results. Basic focus areas of my talks are discussing why carbonate reservoir assessments should be done differently, and how those assessments can best be done to honor differing geologies of carbonate versus non-carbonate systems. In one talk, we build on these ideas as we examine how to predict production patterns within carbonate fields.
