As geoscientists, we have a deep appreciation of the rocks themselves, whether they are in the field or in the lab. We also know that the one constant in geological history is change, and those changes can be both gradual and almost instantaneous (think Chicxulub). Now, COVID-19 is challenging educators to force face-to-face learning environments, including classrooms, laboratories, and field courses to move online. Here is a quick summary of best practices and lessons learned when it comes to transitioning from face-to-face to online learning.

Machine Learning is an increasingly important tool for geoscientists. This one-day workshop demonstrates the implementation of a tailored End-to-End Upstream E & P workflow solution using Machine Learning (ML). It is intended for basic to intermediate skill levels.

Designed to provide a baseline overview of ML, this hands-on workshop will focus on the generation of synthetic Gamma-Ray Logs by applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) Techniques.

The student will learn the various aspects of deploying this workflow in an end-to-end solution. The workshop is designed to provide an appreciation of what is possible through machine learning and to spur thought about how this evolving tool can be otherwise applied.

Join a SIG

The function of the Visiting Geoscientist Program SIG is to provide college and university students worldwide a balanced picture of geosciences in the petroleum, energy minerals, and environmental industries; provide information about careers in the geosciences; present a positive image of a geoscience professional; and encourage geoscience career options for young scientists of high caliber. These goals will be achieved through direct student contact during college and university visits by active geoscientists. To maintain active status as a VG, each committee member must complete at least one visit per fiscal year. This program is funded through the generosity of the Visiting Geoscientists, their companies, the AAPG Foundation and AAPG.
