Emma Giddens was a California girl who fell in love with carbonate rocks, excelled in nearly everything she tried, led her IBA team to a Selley Cup victory and even as a graduate student was known internationally for her “pioneering” research. In fact, professors at three schools marveled at her passion for geology, her intelligence, her kindness and mentorship of fellow students. Tragically, Giddens died shortly after receiving word that her research was being honored with an AAPG Foundation Grant-in-Aid.

As I am writing this column, AAPG has just completed its first fully virtual annual meeting – ACE 2020. By most accounts it was very successful. The technical program committee provided a great slate of talks, posters and core studies. The staff placed it on a platform that was easy and fun to use. The whole meeting was a unique virtual experience.

AAPGWN Publicity Director Amanda Pascali has created an AAPGWN social media campaign to highlight the #FEMALEGEOLOGIST movement and to increase the visibility and achievements of women geoscientists. The goal of this initiative is to directly encourage and boost female geologists’ career profiles and therefore increase the percentage of women staying in geosciences. Our hope is that the increased exposure and visibility will grant them more opportunities to be seen by their peers and superiors as competent and capable technical leaders to whom future generations can aspire.

Education has faced unprecedented challenges around the world due to the current global pandemic, but the importance of geoscience education remains a priority for the AAPG Foundation. And thanks to generous donations from AAPG members around the world, the Foundation’s support of Earth Science Week continues this year, just as it has every year since the program’s inception in 1998. Earth Science Week, organized and administered by the American Geosciences Institute, was created to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences by providing learning resources and activities that engage young people around the world.

A new AAPG technical interest group is attracting international attention, and the founders hope to continue expanding the group’s influence. The Salt Basins TIG began in May 2020 as a way for geoscientists in industry and academia working on or interested in salt basins to connect, collaborate and share ideas, according to one of the co-founders, Rachelle Kernen of the AAPG Women’s Network.

The AAPG Women’s Network is excited to kick off the new AAPG fiscal year with a new leadership team and some new initiatives. The AAPGWN is currently working hard to roll out new initiatives, events, and partnerships. The goal of these programs is to expand our community of geoscientists, provide career development resources to women and increase knowledge sharing among our global members.

To those of you I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting, my name is Meredith Faber and I’m honored to serve as your Division of Professional Affairs president for this coming year. Normally, this article would be a recap of all the exciting DPA events that took place during the annual meeting. However, this year has been far from normal to date and, in a sense, I don’t mind. “Normal” is relative and sometimes boring and our departure from it gives me an opportunity to speak to you about something else entirely.

I would like to start by congratulating the newly elected officers of AAPG - Gretchen Gillis, president-elect, Linda Sternbach, vice president of sections and Denise Stone, treasurer. They will join Rick Fritz, president, Bob Shoup, vice president of regions, Stephanie Nwoko, secretary, Bob Merrill, editor, and Steve Brachman, House of Delegates chairman. AAPG will be in very capable hands going forward as we navigate the new normal in our society and the changing landscape of the oil and gas industry.
