Robert N. Ryan, Jr., is Vice President - Global Exploration for Chevron Global Upstream & Gas. In this capacity he is responsible for the worldwide exploration portfolio as well as corporate reserves governance and reporting.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology in 1979 and a Master of Science degree in geology in 1988, both from Tulane University. He began his career with Texaco in 1979 as a geologist in the Offshore Division in New Orleans, and held a variety of earth science and supervisory positions in exploration and production in New Orleans and Morgan City, Louisiana, before being appointed Area Manager in 1989.

In 1990, through the President's Commission on Executive Exchange in The White House, Ryan was appointed Staff Assistant in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Renewable Energy in the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., where he assisted with utility policy issues related to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Ryan returned to Texaco in 1991 in Business Planning and Analysis in Houston, Texas. In 1993, he was appointed Assistant Division Manager in the Offshore Division in New Orleans, responsible for producing assets in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the deepwater exploration program. He was assigned responsibility for the entire Gulf of Mexico exploration program in 1994.

In 1997, Ryan was appointed Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Exploration and Production at Texaco's headquarters in Harrison, New York, and was appointed Assistant to the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in 1998. He relocated to Houston in 1999 when he was named Vice President of Production Operations responsible for the Indonesia Business Unit.

Later that same year, Ryan was appointed Vice President - Special Projects in the Office of the Chairman of Texaco Inc., responsible for a global re-engineering project designed to improve Texaco's major business systems and processes. The role of Texaco team leader for the Upstream Integration Team was added to his responsibilities when the Chevron and Texaco merger was announced in October 2000. Upon the formation of ChevronTexaco in October 2001, he was named General Manager of Exploration for ChevronTexaco Overseas Petroleum, responsible for exploration outside of North America.

He assumed his current position in September 2003.

Ryan is vice chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Energy & Geoscience Institute at the University of Utah, chairman of the Corporate Advisory Board of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a member of the Board of Advisors of the School of Science and Engineering at Tulane University. He was a member of the School of Earth Sciences Advisory Board at Stanford University and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of CASP affiliated with the Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge University, UK. He also served on the Board of Commissioners of PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia and the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Ballet Association.
