Why I Accepted the Invitation to be a Candidate for an AAPG Office
By Claudio Bartolini

It is important to me to contribute to the success of my profession. Since my time as a geology student, I have volunteered in the organization of geological congresses and technical events. As a graduate student at the Universities of Arizona and Texas, I contributed to the geoscience community, culminating as a Ph.D. candidate involved in activities organized by the GSA, AAPG, and other professional geological organizations. I strongly believe that these contributions to the geosciences lead not only to academic progress, but also benefit the careers of geoscientists and are beneficial to society. The publication of scientific papers is fundamental for the growth, evolution, and advancement of our profession, and is among the main reasons I continue to pursue these professional activities. I enjoy devoting time beyond that required by my normal professional obligations in order to work on national and international activities related to geology and exploration for hydrocarbons.

I have served as principal editor for several major geological volumes, including Geological Society of America Special Paper 340, Mesozoic Sedimentary and Tectonic History of North-Central Mexico (1999); AAPG Memoir 74, The Western Gulf of Mexico Basin: Tectonics, Sedimentary Basins and Petroleum Systems (2001); AAPG Memoir 79, The Circum-Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean: Hydrocarbon Habitats, Basin Formation, and Plate Tectonics (2003); and AAPG Memoir 90, Petroleum Systems in the Southern Gulf of Mexico (2011).

For my work on Memoir 90, I was awarded AAPG’s Robert H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award for the best geological special publication published by the association. My new AAPG memoir 108 entitled Petroleum Geology and Potential of the Colombian Caribbean Margin, was published on December 2015. This is the first international volume and major contribution to the petroleum geology of Colombia. Over the years, I have reviewed manuscripts for the Geological Society of America, the Journal of Petroleum Geology, the International Geology Review, the Mexican Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, and the AAPG, and have contributed geological reports to the AAPG EXPLORER, and coordinated the publication of technical programs and abstract volumes for geological associations across Latin America. I am presently senior associate editor for AAPG’s BULLETIN and technical reviewer for six other journals.

Following my first edited volume for the Geological Society of America in 1999, I have continuously edited geology books for the past fifteen years. The books are all multidisciplinary in nature, and they are intended to contribute to the knowledge of petroleum geology of Mexico, the Caribbean region, and northern South America. I have interacted and collaborated with a large number of geoscientists from many countries, and I have received generous sponsorship from a number of oil companies actively exploring for oil and gas in Latin America.

In summary, my involvement with international geological symposia, reviewing papers, and editing books has helped me develop as an earth science professional, has contributed to the knowledge base of our profession, and with your support I hope to continue doing this for many years to come.
