I am honored to be nominated for the position of president-elect. Since first learning of the AAPG, it has been apparent to me that the organization is the preeminent professional community for all energy geologists, and I wanted to be involved at all levels. My volunteer work for AAPG has helped me meet many of you while repeatedly demonstrating the remarkable reciprocity between service to the AAPG and personal and professional growth.
My elected roles for AAPG have included service on the Executive Committee (treasurer and secretary) and numerous standing and ad hoc committees. The sum of this experience has intimately familiarized me with AAPG’s activities, especially the Executive Committee’s scope, procedures, protocols and the evolving strategic goals for the Association.
My professional background and high level of involvement within the AAPG have provided me with the unique ability to represent the thoughts and ideas of a wide cross-section of AAPG members, from experienced professionals to students, across all Sections and Regions. My time working at Chevron provided insight into international operations and cultural diversity. During my time as director at Detring Energy Advisors, I have worked on acquisition and divestitures for companies of varying sizes, from single-person practices and family offices to larger private equity-backed E&Ps and publicly traded supermajors. These varied stations of my career have provided an expansive view of our industry and the intrinsic value of involvement and diversity in membership and employment.
Pragmatic fiscal responsibility and analytical approaches to problem solving are my strengths, along with the mindset of “keeping things simple” as we set processes in place to address future issues, both known and unpredicted. As a petroleum geologist, I have first-hand experience with the fundamental changes that have transpired in our business. That experience has taught me that flexibility, proactive thinking and decisive action are critical to survival and growth. My career and service to the AAPG have provided the necessary skills that will make me an excellent leader of – and ambassador for – the organization.
My dedication to the organization continues to increase along with the professional benefits generated through my active volunteerism. Whether attending conferences, meetings and courses, serving in leadership roles, working on strategic plans with committees or enjoying the fellowship of my many friends in the organization, I have thoroughly appreciated and coveted every aspect of my involvement.
As all of you understand, my commitment to the organization has been vital in both my professional development and my industry success. My career and my service are linked and remind me of the quote, “To whom much is given, much will be required.”
Each position and project I have undertaken within AAPG has sharpened my professional development, amplified my skillset and proven to be a great adventure. I will never be able to fully repay the AAPG for the opportunities I have been afforded, but that does not mean I will ever stop trying. Through continued service, I will pay forward my sincere debt of gratitude to the organization and its members.
