Peter M.

Lloyd

Peter Lloyd received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Natural Sciences, Geology, from the University of Cambridge. He has since enjoyed a 40 year international career with BP,Deminex, and Schlumberger where he worked in a series of technical, marketing and business management positions in exploration and production, as well as research and engineering. Peter has lived and worked in Europe, the United States, Latin America and both the Middle and Far East. He was part of the team that built the first electrical imaging tool in 1985, and has specialized in high resolution image analysis and log interpretation in complex lithologies. His job for most of those years; evolving data acquisition and reservoir characterization methodologies to help people figure out where to best drill their next wells. Peter has presented over thirty technical papers and has been a Distinguished Lecturer for the SPWLA (Fractured Basement and Chasing Channel Sands), the EAGE (Education & Career Development) and is an AAPG Visiting Geoscientist. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas, a Visiting Professor at the University of Brunei, an Honorary Professor at Heriot Watt University and is a Learning Advisor and Lecturer at Shell’s Open University. He currently teaches short courses for Schlumberger-NExT, Heriot Watt and the EAGE in locations around the world. Peter has been elected to various offices serving as a Regional Director on the Board of the SPWLA, as President of the AAPG’s Asia/Pacific Region and as AAPG Vice President. He received an SPWLA Award of Appreciation, an AAPG Environmental Award, a Distinguished Service Award and their Honorary Membership. He is a Certified Geologist and Chartered by the Geological Society of London. He is a life member of the AAPG, the Geol. Soc. of Malaysia, the Indonesian Petroleum Association, SEAPEX and the SPE. Peter chairs the EAGE’s Student Affairs Committee and is a Distinguished Educator.

Citation: To Peter M. Lloyd, renowned global geoscientist, consummate professional, tireless advocate for the AAPG, especially through the House of Delegates, and for AAPG’s international members.

Reviewing his many years of membership and faithful, productive service in the AAPG, and especially in its House of Delegates, it is clear that Peter Lloyd should be viewed as an outstanding example for future AAPG/HoD leaders to emulate – professional, informed, intelligent, dedicated, energetic, and selfless. He wanted whatever was good for the Organization and its members, and he was always ready to put his shoulder behind the wheel to advance its interests, in whatever capacity help was needed.

A graduate of Cambridge University, Peter won a Bachelor’s Degree (with Honours) in 1974 and a Master’s Degree in 1978.  He was president of the Sedgwick Club, the world’s oldest student-run geological society, a harbinger of his future leadership activities. In succession he was with BP and Deminex, before joining Schlumberger in 1981, where he spent the remainder of a distinguished professional career.  He is a Certified Geologist (AAPG/DPA), and a Chartered Fellow of the Geological Society of London. Throughout his long career, Peter has also been an active participant in many different professional associations, such as the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Geological Society of Malaysia, Indonesian Petroleum Association, and Southeast Asia Petroleum Exploration Society.  Most of his many presentations and papers have concerned a) Reservoir Characterization, b) Fractured Reservoirs, c) Acquisition Tools, d) Software Engineering, and e) Geotechnical Education. Beyond the usual career demands, four fields of geological interest have claimed his continuing involvement as a volunteer: Teaching of student and professional geoscientists, Student chapters, Environmental science, and Professional affairs.  Peter’s charming wife Christiane has been an integral asset to his career success.

Peter joined the AAPG in 1979. His service record is impressive -- he served on 15 committees (chairing four); the Advisory Council; President of the Asia/Pacific Region; twice as AAPG Vice-President; and once as a candidate for AAPG President. He received a Special Commendation Award (International) in 2000, three Certificates of Merit, and Honorary Membership (2008).

But the vehicle through which he made his greatest contributions was the House of Delegates: starting in 1999, Peter Lloyd served on numerous HoD committees, chairing the Resolutions Committee (2006/07) and the Constitution and Bylaws Committee (2010-11). While deeply respectful of the history and traditions of AAPG’s Domestic Sections, his continuing focus was on advancing the role of the Association’s emerging International Regions. That evolution stretched over more than a dozen years. In retrospect, Peter Lloyd was one of a small cadre of dedicated international geoscientists whose unwavering support led to the full flowering of the Asia-Pacific and European Regions within the AAPG’s global community of petroleum geoscientists.

One of the requisite activities of successful career professionals is active involvement in professional societies.  There can be no better example than Peter Lloyd’s distinguished and successful service to the AAPG, especially through its House of Delegates, which fittingly now recognizes his many contributions with its highest award, Honorary Member of the House.
