We are pleased to announce that AAPG Middle East’s first virtual GTW on Decision Based Integrated Reservoir Modeling was a resounding success with fantastic feedback received from committee members, speakers and attendees. The virtual workshop took place from 1-4 February 2021 and attracted 65 attendees from 14 different companies and 8 different countries.

We are pleased to announce that AAPG Middle East’s first virtual GTW on Decision Based Integrated Reservoir Modeling was a resounding success with fantastic feedback received from committee members, speakers and attendees. The workshop was initially planned to take place in person however due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the decision was made in November for the workshop to be held virtually in order to ensure the health and safety of all participants. The virtual workshop took place from 1-4 February 2021 and attracted 65 attendees from 14 different companies and 8 different countries.

This was the second edition of the workshop and the event consisted of technical presentations, breakout discussion sessions and a virtual field trip which all registered participants were encouraged to attend. The GTW brought together some of the best and brightest minds in geosciences to discuss the latest technologies and cost-effective approaches for building accurate and predictive 3D reservoir models in the oil and gas industry.

The opening of the event featured an inaugural keynote by Dr. Aus Al Tawil, Manager, Southern Area Reservoir Characterization, Saudi Aramco followed by a session keynote delivered by Colin Daly, Advisor Modeling, Schlumberger and three technical presentations.

The following three days included session keynotes from Gérard Massonnat, Reservoir Geology and Geomodeling Expert at Total; Barry Zang, CEO and Founder of Quantico Energy Solutions and Tareq Al-Zahrani, Head of Advanced Reservoir Simulation Unit at Saudi Aramco.

In total, the Decision Based Integrated Reservoir Modeling virtual GTW included 4 sessions, 16 oral presentations and 4 breakout sessions.

The workshop’s 4 technical sessions focused on the following themes:

  • DBM Current Best Practices – What can be Enhanced?
  • Multi-Disciplinary Data Integration – New Approaches
  • ML and AI – Practical Applications, Recent Innovations and Automation
  • Case Studies – Successes and Pitfalls

The last day of the event featured the virtual field trip “Analogue Study for Modeling Depositional Environment” organized by Saudi Aramco and led by Mohammed Al-Masrahy and Mokhles Mezghani which comprised a field study of a range of continental clastic modern systems and related sedimentary facies.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for their efforts in putting together such a comprehensive technical program. We also want to recognize Saudi Aramco as our Platinum Sponsor and field trip organizer – thank you for the great support. And last but not least, thanks to our presenters and attendees for your commitment and for making this GTW possible.

While this year’s event may have looked different, the Decision Based Integrated Reservoir Modeling virtual GTW community and impact potential remained the same.
