Volcanism, Deformation, and Fluid Flow Along the Queen Charlotte Transform Margin of Alaska, USA, and British Columbia, Canada

The Queen Charlotte transform (QC) fault system is a major structural feature that extends from near the Northern end of Vancouver Island, Canada, to the Fairweather Range of Alaska, where it connects to the Fairweather (FW) Fault system. The QC–FW transform marks the margin between the North American and Pacific plates. Until recently the QC fault system, exclusively located in the oceanic realm, was poorly mapped, but through the efforts of the USGS, Geological Survey of Canada, University of Alaska, and NOAA, the entire ca. 900 km length of the fault and its immediate surrounding seafloor have been surveyed using multi-beam echosounder and geophysical instruments. The data present a straight "knife edged" fault that appears to accommodate the majority of the relative plate motion along the primary strand of the system. However, extensive deformation associated with volcanism and fluid seeps are present throughout most of the length of the system. Elongated conjugate ridges, volcanic cones, and mud volcanoes are well imaged in the bathymetry and in seismic-reflection profiles. Multiple fluid sources including thermogenic-formed fluids from hydrocarbon basins are speculated. Seafloor structures and geomorphic features formed on the seafloor from volcanism and fluid flow provide valuable habitats for various organisms that live at depth in the region.

H. Gary Greene is director of the Center for Habitat Studies, Moss Landing Marine Labs in California, and Tombolo Mapping Lab, Orcas Island Washington; Emeritus Professor in Geological Oceanography; Research Faculty member at Friday Harbor Labs, University of Washington; research scientist at the Sitka Sound Science Center in Alaska; President of the Circum-Pacific Council. Past Director and faculty member of Moss Landing Marine Labs; Program Director and Project Chief of the Branch of Marine Geology, USGS. First student marine geophysicist for Texico and Richfield petroleum companies. Pioneered a marine benthic habitat characterization scheme for mapping rockfish and other ecological habitats using geophysical methods. Experienced in marine tectonics, submarine canyon formations, transform margin development, sedimentary basin formation, and marine ecological relationship to geomorphology and substrate types.


How Do You Explore? The Fundamentals of Play Based Exploration

Many small to medium oil and gas exploration companies search far and wide for opportunities. A successful exploration company has a clear strategy predicated on studying basins and plays in order to define the best prospects. Widely recognized by the major E&P companies, Play Based Exploration (PBE) is the leading way to explore for oil and gas. Simply put, PBE is a method to build and leverage an understanding of basins and petroleum systems based on hydrocarbon plays. PBE is an evaluation process aiming to understand the fundamental logic of HC plays, resulting in a thorough technical basis for ranking and prioritizing all exploration projects and activities. By focusing fist on the basin, then on individual plays and petroleum systems the exploration team focuses early on top tier, second tier, and least prospective areas of interest. The first step is to describe the regional context and the basin framework. In the subsequent play focus, petroleum systems are analyzed by quantifying risk in common segments. Overlaying the resulting common risk segments clearly focuses on prospective vs. non-prospective areas.

Andre A. Coffa
Andre A. Coffa

Dr. Andre A Coffa has a Ph.D. in basin analysis, sedimentology, and stratigraphy. He has 22 years experience in the energy sector beginning his career with Shell International’s research labs. He subsequently worked in deep-water exploration, onshore development, and near shore appraisal in diverse operating countries such as the USA, Egypt, Oman, The Netherlands, Malaysia, and Brazil. He has conducted Play Based Exploration studies for large, medium, and small companies in the Middle East, Brazil, Indonesia, The Philippines, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Myanmar. He is a past president of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia (Vic/Tas Branch), Vice-Chair of AAPG's 2015 Melbourne International Conference and Exhibition, and current executive committee member for AAPG Asia-Pacific.
