Mapping River Bar Deposits to Reconstruct Paleo-Channel Dynamics in Alluvial Basins
Reconstructing ancient river dynamics provides important insight into how landscapes self-organize over long timescales and respond to climate and land-cover changes. This information can also help predict the quality and connectivity of subsurface fluvial reservoirs. We are exploring new approaches to mapping river bar deposits that are aimed to help improve reconstructions of river bar kinematics, and the relative rates of channel avulsion and channel migration in ancient systems.

Bio
Liz Hajek leads the Penn State University PaleoEnvironmental Reconstruction & Surface Earth Dynamics (PSUPER SED) Lab. Liz received her BA in Geography and Geology from Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, 2002) and her MS and PhD from University of Wyoming (2005, 2009). She was a Post-Doctoral Scholar at the University of Minnesota St. Anthony Falls Lab in 2009-2010. She is currently an Associate Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University. Liz has served as the SEPM Councillor for Research Activities (2016-2018) and has organized several research conferences including the SEPM Research Conference on "Autogenic Dynamics of Sedimentary Systems” and served as the Technical Program Committee Chair for the 2017 International Conference on Fluvial Sedimentology. Liz is active in community efforts to broaden diversity and inclusion in geosciences and sedimentary geology.
