Why It is Critical to Balance Your Interpretation

Geologic interpretations are the basis of most exploration workflows, whether building a 3-D framework, a geocellular model, or modeling HC basins and estimating HC reserves. All these workflows rely on the most realistic and accurate interpretation in order to produce high-confidence results.
Despite the importance, this step is often undervalued. We mostly focus on honoring seismic reflectors and well data without adequately testing the geometrical and/or mechanical validity of the regional model. This becomes especially critical in poor or missing data areas, where we interpolate between existing data points using our best logic and geologic understanding but not applying rules of geometrical compatibility and volume preservation. The process of balancing and restoration will reveal inconsistencies and allow to correct the compatibility problems using techniques of line-length and area-balancing.
Interpretation validation should be a standard component of our best practices and QA process. Incorporated into our workflows from the beginning on, it will significantly save time and cost down the road.

About the Presenter
Catalina Luneburg, Ph.D., is the founder and director of TerraEx Group, a Geoscience training and consulting company with an innovative services model. She is a recognized Structural Geology/Tectonics expert with over 25 years of experience in academics and the HC industry. She specializes in the validation of HC basins worldwide and has a proven track record in structural geology modeling, 2-D/3-D balancing and restorations, as well as HC estimates, 3-D frameworks, and fracture prediction. She has held positions with Halliburton, GeoLogic Systems, and in Midland Valley in development and industrial applications of various software. She has authored several books and patents.
A Global Tour of Mud Volcanoes

There are over 300 known active onshore mud volcanoes globally, and many more offshore. Mud volcanoes are subsurface fluid escape features in which high pore pressures drive fluids, gases, and subsurface sediments to the surface. As such, mud volcanoes offer a unique window into the subsurface and can be used to aid in hydrocarbon exploration. However, mud volcanoes are also hazards that can erupt violently, causing damage, and even loss of life.
This talk will summarize mud volcanoes around the world, from South America to Europe and Asia. We will examine mud volcano plumbing systems and their link to petroleum systems. Additionally, this talk will look at the Sidoarjo disaster, which is the world’s largest human-made mud volcano. This disaster was triggered by a drilling blowout in 2006. It has resulted in the burial of seven square kilometers of a major Indonesian city, with an associated 40,000 people displaced and 23 dead.

About the Presenter
Dr. Tingay is currently AAPG Asia Pacific Region President, an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, and Head (Pore Pressure/Geomechanics) at PETRONAS. Dr. Tingay has 20 years of academic and industry experience in overpressure analysis, pore pressure prediction, and petroleum geomechanics. He has worked worldwide, but with a primary focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including the compilation of the first present-day stress map for Southeast Asian petroleum basins; determination of overpressure origins and new pore pressure prediction methods, investigation of the triggers of the Sidoarjo mud volcano disaster in Indonesia, and; understanding the geomechanics of high pressure and high-stress environments. Dr. Tingay’s track record includes publishing over 75 peer-reviewed papers, giving 30 keynotes, plenary or featured talks, and providing over 100 media interviews. He has received numerous awards for research and science communication, including the AAPG Cam Sproule Award, Australian SEG Early Achievement Award, and an AIPS ‘Young Tall Poppy Science Award.’
