Virtual Research Symposia Series
  • In an effort to stay active and to generate some income for the AAPG Latin America and Caribbean Region in the second half of 2020, the leadership developed a series of Virtual Research Symposia highlighting the geology of some of the region’s most prolific basins
  • Symposiums are technical events targeted to researchers and professionals working both in industry and academia
  • Symposia will be held via Zoom Enterprise Webinar
  • The format includes four technical sessions with five presentations each, 2-4 keynotes from highly renowned speakers, and two panel discussions with experts in the field
  • Each symposium lasts two full days, with four technical sessions and a panel discussion held at the end of each day
  • The registration fee will be $ 50 for professionals and $ 25 for students, prices that can be paid by displaced workers and employees who are unable to receive company support for their participation
  • All symposia will be recorded and made available for purchase on-demand following the symposia

    #ThursdayThoughts
    • Initiative developed to connect LACR leadership with members, students and professionals, so they can get to get to know their leaders and hear their vision for the energy industry, for AAPG and for the region
    • Thursday Thoughts sessions will take place every 1-2 months, depending on availability of leadership members and other activities planned in the region
    • Each 60-minute session includes a moderated interview about specific topics of interest of the speaker and questions of participants connected via Zoom webinar.

    AAPG Venezuela Conference 2020
    • Event developed and planned by the Venezuelan YP and student chapters (ULA, UCV, USB, UDO) to bring together all the chapters in the country in a virtual setting open to all the region.

    Earth Science Week
    • 7-10 June – Virtual Academic week organized by the Geology department of the Patagonia National University located in Comodoro, Chubut Province, Argentina. Mateo Goyberg, YP Argentina chapter member, gave an online talk entitled “Tests on Rock Samples: From the field to the lab. Example of a workflow on Unconventional Cores”. 25 students attended.
    Student/Young Professional Sustainable Development in Energy Projects Contest
    • AAPG LACR and sponsors evaluated the proposals received for the contest highlighting energy projects promoting sustainable development with social, environmental and economic impacts
    • Sponsors: ACGGP, NEOIL Exploration, Rock Whisperer LLC
    • On June 23, AAPG LACR held an Awards Ceremony via Zoom to highlight and share the projects with region members and sponsors and to encourage students and young professionals to get involved with sustainable development initiatives. 53 people from 30 countries attended.
    • Contest winners will receive cash to fund their projects as well as support with different stages of project development.
      • First place: $2,000 – Project: “Friendly Energy: a Step Toward Sustainable Development and Ethno-education” by students from Universidad de Pamplona, Cúcuta, Colombia
      • Second place: $1,000 – Project: “Geo-routes in Putumayo (Colombia), Oil & Gas Influential Zone” by students and recent graduates from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia

    • RTW committees originally planned to complete all activities by the end of AAPG’s FY 2020 fiscal year (30 June) but were unable to do so because of COVID
