Instructor

Dr. Mamdouh A. Shebl
Research Professor – Petrophysicist, BERG-HUGHES Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems

Dr. Mamdouh A. Shebl has over 34 years of expertise in unconventional reservoir development, sedimentary rocks and sedimentation, petroleum geology, and reservoir characterization, as well as petrophysics in the exploration of hydrocarbon and the enhancement of conventional and unconventional petroleum reservoir development and management.

Shebl holds a Ph.D. in petroleum geology with extensive domestic and international experience in siliciclastics and unconventional reservoir characterization. His expertise includes integrating log data correlation and interpretation, reservoir geochemistry, siliciclastic diagenesis, clay mineralogy with modeling of reservoir heterogeneity and facies architecture for detailed geological and petrophysical reservoir characteristics of siliciclastics, and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs.

  • Over 10 years’ experience in Shale Oil and Shale Gas reservoir characterization.
  • Served as the MCBU unconventional petrophysical SME and Advisor at Chevron.
  • Developed the standardized unconventional petrophysical interpretation (UCRI) workflow to optimize production from the Permian Basin by defining the best reservoir quality and completion quality as well as defining the most appropriate landing zone(s) and best completion strategy, including frack stages and clusters placement.
  • Led the development of the multi-disciplinary workflow "CYPHER" at Halliburton for unconventional asset development.
  • Worked on several shale oil and shale gas reservoirs in the Southeast U.S. such as the Wolfcamp, Cline, Bone Springs, and Avalon (West Texas Permian Basin), Springer (the Carter Knox "Scoop" area of Oklahoma), Haynesville (East Texas-West Louisiana), Eagle Ford and Barnett (South Texas), Marcellus (New York and Pennsylvania), and Montney (Canada).
Course Content

The first part of the class is designed to give attendees a better understanding of the risk factors associated with unconventional “shale” hydrocarbon reservoirs, based on the geology, mineralogy, organic-richness, hydrocarbon content, and the reservoir rock mechanical properties.

Petrophysics is an integral part of the detail unconventional reservoir characterization and de-risking of production from unconventional “source” plays. It also serves as the core for integration and collaboration of many disciplines such as geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and earth modeling as well as drilling, completion, reservoir stimulation, and production engineering. Attendees will be exposed to ways to identify and mitigate risk factors associated with shale plays.

The class will view examples and address various ways for collaboration between petrophysicists and other disciplines to achieve efficient unconventional asset development through better understanding and proper dealing with the unconventional reservoir.

Who Should Attend:

Geologists, Petrophysicists, Geophysicists, Earth Modelers, Drilling Engineers, Reservoir Engineers, Completion Engineers, and Production Engineers.
