Latin America & Caribbean Region Report October 2018

 

In October 2018 the AAPG Latin America and Caribbean Region held its first-ever joint event with the SPE Colombia Section. The workshop, Optimizing Geosciences and Engineering to Maximize Colombia’s Offshore Potential, included high profile speakers and state-of-the-art technical presentations.

Advance the science of geology
Visiting Geoscientist Program (VGP)
  • 5 October – Ivan Olaya delivered the short course “Sequence Stratigraphy in Continental and Marine Sediments” at EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia.33 students and 2 professionals attended
  • 19 October – Guilherme Arruda Sowek delivered the lecture “Applying Oil and Gas Prospects to Exploration,” at UFPR in Brazil. 14 people attended.
  • 19 October – Guilherme Arruda Sowek delivered the short course “Introduction to Risk and Probability Analysis in Oil and Gas Exploration” at UFPR in Brazil. 18 people attended.
  • 26 October – Victor Vega delivered the lecture “Regional trends in current industry environment and role of alternative energies” at the University of Costa Rica in San José. 20-25 students and professors attended.
  • 30 October – German Bayona delivered the talk "Jurassic and Middle Eocene angular unconformities in the sedimentary record and their implications in oil industry" at UNAL Bogota in Colombia. 35 students attended.
Earth Science Week

Brazil

  • 18 October – Seven YP Brazil chapter members presented a talk about sedimentary rocks to high school students. 13 students attended
  • 30 October – Priscila Amaral visited the Natural History Museum of Taubaté to investigate the potential for organizing future Earth Science Week activities.

Colombia

  • October 16-17 – Student Chapters from Universidad Industrial de Santander in Bucaramanga, Colombia held an Earth Science Week event involving 300 high school students. The event provided the opportunity to talk about the geology of the region, the importance of geologists to sustainable development as well as space to discuss energy, water and geohazards. The event was sponsored by the Colombian Geological Society and supported by the Geological Mapping Group from the Colombian Geological Survey.

Mexico

  • 12 October – Instituto Politécnico Nacional – sent an announcement about Earth Sciences Week to students interested in being involved in planning the event. Recruited 20 volunteers.
  • 11/17/29 October – Chapter held Earth Science Week Planning meetings at Sanborn and the UNAM Geology Museum, and the UNAM Geoscience Mobile Laboratory

Peru

  • 24 October - Earth Science Week held at Santa Clara High School. 40 students attended.
  • 26 October - Earth Science Week held at Los Jazmines de Naranjal High School. 25 students attended.

Trinidad & Tobago

  • 6 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) & Therese Steele taught 30 students an Introduction to Earth Sciences for the STEM program in San Fernando Modern High School. The students learned how are rocks are formed and learned about rock properties, deposition and petroleum systems.
  • 13 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) taught 20 students “Introduction to Earth Sciences” for the STEM program in St. Francis Boys' High School.
  • 27 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) & Shaliza Ali taught 20 students an Stratigraphy & Structural Geology for the STEM program in St. Francis Boys' High School.

Corporate Advisory Board
  • Steering Committee approved creating a LACR Corporate Advisory Board which could provide strategic and tactical guidance to leadership and help to provide ongoing support for education and workforce development initiatives
Chevron Partnership
  • Working with Chevron Africa and Latin America to secure University Datapages subscriptions for universities in Suriname, Guyana, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina
Bolivia Partnership
  • The Bolivian Ministry of Hydrocarbons sent a draft Memorandum of Understanding to AAPG to promote technical and educational activities in Bolivia
  • LACR office is working with the Vice Minister to finalize the MoU and to develop a list of programs

  • 3-8 September – UNMSM, Peru hosted the VIII National Congress of Geological Engineering Students. 8 chapter members attended.
  • 28-30 September and 01 October – UNI, Peru hosted the field trip "Stratigraphy and Structural Styles in the Sub-Andean of Central Peru" by Walther Leon and César Pinto. 18 students participated.
  • 1 October – UNSAAC, Peru hosted the talk "Geological Potential of Limestone in Peru," by Juan Pablo Navarro. 65 students attended.
  • 2-4 October – 6 members of the UNI, Peru chapter participated in the IX INGEPET 2018 in Lima
  • 5 October – UNI, Peru, held the conference "Graduate education in the United States - What, Why, When, Where and How" by Yoana Walschap. 22 students participated.
  • 5 October – UFRuralRJ, Brazil, hosted the activity " 2D and 3D interpretation of seismic data." 4 students attended.
  • 8 October – UFRJ, Brazil, hosted "Rock Geomechanics applied to the Petroleum Industry,” by Aline Teophilo from Cenpes/Petrobrás. 15 people attended.
  • 9 October – IPN, Mexico hosted an informative talk about IBA 2019: Previous experiences IBA team 2018 and launch of the announcement of the team recruitment. 22 students attended in person and several more joined via a live broadcast.
  • 10 October – UFPR, Brazil, held the lecture "Modern Stromatolites from the Andean Lakes: Unlocking Ancient Stromatolitic Sedimentary Models," by Daniel Poiré, of Universidad Nacional de La Plata. 25 people attended.
  • 11 October – UNAL Bogota Colombia, held the activity "Petroleum System for Dummies" by Gustavo Rodriguez. 30 students attended.
  • 11 October – UBA, Argentina held the talk “IBA experience” by Sofía
    Jorge, Sofía Manusakis and Ailin Gerber. 25 students attended.
  • 11 October – UMSA, Bolivia, hosted the webinar “Information Chat of Imperial Barrel Award 2018” by the UBA 2018 IBA team. 15 students attended.
  • 11 October – UFS, Brazil, held the activity "National Week of Mitigating Disasters: the Applications of Geology in the activities of Civil Defense.” 120 attendees included students and professionals.
  • 16 October – UFRuralRJ, Brazil, participated in the poster session at the National Science and Technology Week 2018, presenting the theme: “Importance of Extracurricular Activities in the Academic-Professional Development of Geology Students at UFRRJ.” 7 students attended.
  • 17 October – UNAL Bogota, Colombia, participated in "GeoFair meeting with the Faculty of Science". 2 Student Chapter leaders attended.
  • 20 and 27 October – UFRuralRJ, Brazil, held the activity "GeoSUITE short course". 6 students attended.
  • 22 October – UERJ, Brazil, held the activity “Technical Visit to the Petrec company”. 5 students attended.
  • 22 October – UFPR, Brazil, held the lecture "The Importance of Structural Geology in Petroleum Exploration and Development,” by Haakon Fossen (University of Bergen). 7 AAPG members attended.
  • 22 October – UNAL Bogota, Colombia, held the activity "Petroleum Exploration for Dummies" by Edgar Kairuz . 60 students attended.
  • 22-26 October – UCV, Venezuela had a stand at the university’s Research Days event JIFI). 90 people attended.
  • 22 and 27 October – AAPG Student Chapter in association SPE UWI and SEG UWI held a flood relief drive in aid of the areas devastated by recent heavy rainfall. Approximately 30 students and young professionals attended.
  • 23 October – UCV, Venezuela, held the activity "What is the Imperial Barrel Award?" by Jesus Monsalve. 30 people attended.
  • 23 October – UCV, Venezuela, held the activity "The Geophysicist in the Business World," by Daniel Rafael (PetroKariña Manager). 30 people attended.
  • 24 October – UMSA, Bolivia held a meeting with AAPG YP Bolivia Chapter in Oruro during the XXIII Bolivian Geological Congress
  • 24 October – UCV, Venezuela, held the activity "The Role of Geophysicist in the Oil Industry" by Yaraixa Perez (Rosneft Venezuela Manager). 30 people attended.
  • 24 October – UCV, Venezuela, presented the research work "Gravimetric and Magnetic Response of the Atlantic ridge and the Mantle Plume in Iceland, “by Karen Mentado (Geophysics student). 30 people attended.
  • 25 October – UERJ, Brazil, in partnership with the Brazil YP Chapter, held the talk “Elements and Processes of Petroleum Systems,” by Carlos Fracalossi. 35 students attended.
  • 25 October – UCV, Venezuela, hosted the talk "Integration of gravimetric and magnetic methods in the identification of faults southeast of Espino Graben," by Luisdaniel Rivera (Geophysics student). 30 people attended.
  • 25 October – UNISINOS, Brazil, hosted " IBA information and team formation ". 10 students attended".
  • 25 October – IPN, Mexico hosted" Hydrocarbons in Generating Rock or Shale Gas: a New Proposal of Terminology for the Latin America Oil Industry" by Mario Martinez Yañez (AAPG IPN SC Member). Held event collaboration with AMGP Mexico. Also presented the book "Mexico: History of Oil Exploration, their Amazing Carbonates and Future Potential,” by Sierra Oil & Gas. 80 students attended.
  • 25 September – UFRuralRJ, Brazil hosted a reservoir engineering short course. 6 students attended.
  • 26 October – UNS, Argentina, held the conference “Petroleum Mechanical Pumping” taught by César A. Lanz. 50 geology and engineering students and young professionals attended.
  • 26 October – UCV, Venezuela hosted "Structural Characterization of the San Fernando Graben of Apure," by Noel Crasto (Geophysics student). 30 people attended.
  • 26 October – UCV, Venezuela, hosted "Importance of being a member of a student chapter,” by Giovannina Ragusa (Schlumberger Venezuela Manager). 30 people attended.
  • 26 October – UFRGS, Brazil, organized a SC Executive Committee welcome barbecue. 10 students and young professionals attended.
  • 29 October – UNI, Peru, held the conference "Application of Seismic and Petrophysics in the Hydrocarbon Industry" by Javier Soto and Jose Vasquez. 15 students participated.
  • 29 October – UFS, Brazil, held the activity "Opening of the Pre-IBA 2018 - Preparatory Course of the Imperial Barrel Award 2019". 20 students attended.
  • 31 October – UBA, Argentina, held the talk “Importance of Geosteering in the Development of Unconventional Resources" by Rafael Aguilar. 9 students attended in person; 6 connected via Facebook Live
YP Chapters

Bolivia

  • 14 October – Chapter launched its first geophotography contest, “CaptureGeo Bolivia 2018.” Will collect photos, and winning entries will be incorporated into a 2019 calendar and agenda.
  • 20 October –Oscar Irazaba guided a visit to the UNAM Geology Museum located in Mexico City for representatives of YP Bolivia, YP Mexico and student chapters from UNAM and IPN. Irazaba presented the museum and a private collection of minerals called “Dr. Romero”. 7 people attended
  • 23 October – Chapter produced its third YP Bolivia Chapter Bulletin, featuring 16 pages of information about chapter activities. Also included interviews with a senior geologist and a young professional.
  • 23 October – Held meeting with the Universidad Autónoma Tomás Frías (UATF) in Potosí to talk about forming an AAPG student chapter. Meeting was held in Oruro during the XXIII Bolivian Geological Congress. 2 professors and 13 students attended

Brazil

Mexico

  • 20 October –Educational Liaison Víctor Antuna Herrera held a video-chat with students of Coatzacoalcos University, and gave them the orientation of making their student chapter
  • 24 October – AAPG YP Chapter assisted an AMGP student chapters formation and used the opportunity to recruit student members for AMGP and AAPG

Peru

  • 2 - 4 October – AAPG YP Peru Chapter members supported the AAPG stand at the INGEPET Congress in Lima
  • 12, 15, 17-18 October – hosted “Fundamentals of Seismic Interpretation,” by Vladimir Cabello. 15 attendees.

Trinidad & Tobago

  • 6 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) & Therese Steele taught 30 students an Introduction to Earth Sciences for the STEM program in San Fernando Modern High School. The students learned how are rocks are formed and learned about rock properties, deposition and petroleum systems.
  • 13 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) taught 20 students “Introduction to Earth Sciences” for the STEM program in St. Francis Boys' High School.
  • 22 October – The AAPG YPTT in collaboration with donors raised $1600 USD to aid and assist the victims of the devastating flooding across Northern Trinidad. The money was used to purchase hampers containing a variety of items ranging from food items, toiletries, water, cleaning supplies and sandwiches. These hampers were distributed to over 30 homes in the areas of St. Helena and Kelly Village, Caroni. Chapter leaders Amrit Cooblal and Tanuja Balkeran and 10 volunteers coordinated the effort.
  • 27 October – Amrit Cooblal (AAPG YPTT President) & Shaliza Ali taught 20 students an Stratigraphy & Structural Geology for the STEM program in St. Francis Boys' High School.
