Ong Hock Kim makes a VG visit to Curtin University in Miri

 

Curtin University in Miri presents Geology Symposium

 Ong Hock Kim, better known as Kim to us in the region, paid a visit to Curtin University in Miri, Sarawak, at their invitation, to attend the Curtin Geology Symposium 2015. This geological event was organised by the Curtin Geology Club/Curtin Sarawak Student Chapter of AAPG. The theme for Curtin Geology Symposium 2015 was “Advances in Petroleum Geology”, and was held from 15-19 September 2015.

The event was to promote Curtin University Sarawak’s Applied Geology program as well as serving as a platform for the current Applied Geology students in Curtin University Sarawak for exposure to the professional world of the oil and gas sector. The symposium focused on the present and the future of the Petroleum Geology industry and featured a series of activities such as the Geology Day, Industrial Site Visits, Technical Talks and Lambir Hills Outdoor Hike and Learn Trip.

Curtin Geology Day 2015

Students from high schools around Miri, Sarawak joined the one day event which was held on 15 September . The fundamental aim was to promote and advocate Geology as a choice of study for the high school students. The event featured academic presentations, team building games, visit to geological labs and interactive session.

 Industrial Site Visits

Students from the university had the opportunity to visit the Wells Learning Hub of Shell Sarawak Berhad, one of the largest oil and gas company in the region. The site visits included presentation regarding the oil & gas industry in upstream business and a visit to the simulation labs.

 Technical Talks

The event was organized as part of the Visiting Geologists program involving geologists from Shell Malaysia, Mr. Ong Hock Kim and Ms. Daniela Vlad. The topics presented were “Geophysical Input on Hydrocarbon Maturation” and “Reservoir Heterogeneities and Why Stratigraphy is Important”.

Mr. Ong Hock Kim from Shell Malaysia presented the topic “Geophysical Input to Hydrocarbon Maturation as part of the Visiting Geologists program.

 Lambir Hills Outdoor Hike and Learn Trip

The hiking trip was held on 19 September 2015 in Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak and it involved a geological quiz and lecture session on the geological properties of the area. The purpose of the event was to promote a healthy lifestyle, student interactions and to expose participants to the natural geological wonders.

Curtin Geology Symposium 2015 was proudly sponsored by Shell Malaysia, Faculty of Engineering and Science of Curtin University Sarawak, Student Council of Curtin University Sarawak, and Marketing Department of Curtin University Sarawak.
