This course is part of AAPG’s upcoming Fundamentals Education Conference, taking place November 9-13, in Houston, TX.  It is excellent for geologists, geophysicists, engineers, techs or anyone who will make maps on the computer and/or needs to assess the veracity of maps made on the computer.

The individual FEC course "Subsurface Contouring: The Secrets to Optimizing Your Maps for Oil & Gas Exploration" is primarily a contouring workshop where less time will be spent on lecture and more on contouring exercises and comparing hand contouring with computer contouring. Attendees will:

  • Gain new insight into techniques of proper hand contouring
  • Be able to generate contour maps by hand
  • Learn the methods used by computers to generate contours

We will look at the importance of understanding and integrating the 3D nature of the volumes being contoured, either geological or geophysical. Proper methods of contouring multiple intersecting faults amount multiple surfaces will be demonstrated. We will also discuss the importance of good contouring, not only in the search for typical oil and gas reservoirs, but also in the development of resource plays.
