Geology Field Trip

The North Oman Mountains comprises different rock units which are further subdivided into many smaller units ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent. The geologic evolution of these units is preserved and exposed along deeply cut wadis on the flanks of the mountains. The first main unit is the autochtenous carbonates and clastic sequence ranging in age from Precambrian to Cretaceous. This unit is overlain by allochthonous sequence that contains a lower deep marine sedimentary unit known as Hawasina which is overlain by the famous oceanic crust unit known as the Semail ophiolite. In Muscat, the Precambrian Sedimentary basement is exposed in Saih Hatat located to the south of the studied area. The sedimentary basement is made up of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, dolomite, and thick quartzite units deposited in glacier and shallow marine systems. This sequence is overlain by the upper autochthenous rocks which were deposited in a wide shallow marine shelf after the opening of Tethys Ocean during Late Permian to Cretaceous. During the same time, the oceanic crust that will be later emplaced over Oman was generated along mid-oceanic ridge of the Tethys Ocean as well as the deep marine Hawasina sediments. During Late Cretaceous and due to Convergent plate tectonics and closure of the Tethys Ocean, the oceanic crust which is now known as the Semail ophiolite is thrusted above the deep marine sediments of Hawasina, which is also thrusted above the shelf carbonates of Hajar super group, in a process that took about 35 Ma to complete, and stayed as low relief island for about 40 Ma (Glennie, 1995) before they are uplifted after the opening of Red Sea and the related convergence tectonics.

Meet & Greet Session

This great networking opportunity will serve as a link to connect students and professionals during the event. The evening will start with a small introduction by Aisha Al Bulushi, YPSS Chair, followed by an exciting leadership talk by Said Al-Hajri, the President of the AAPG Middle East Regional Council.

During the dinner one experienced professional will be sitting at each table in order to lead informative discussions with the young professionals and students. The experienced professionals will move tables throughout the evening in order to meet all of the young attendees at the event. Team building games will also be held to encourage the participants to interact with each other.

Short Course on Creative Thinking and Goal Setting

This half-day workshop covers two vitally important topics for a personal development. The first is creative thinking, one of the most sought after skills in the business world. Nowadays the organizations (or entrepreneurs) that survive are those that can constantly come up with new products, services and/or better ways of operating. But while some people seem to be simply bursting with creativity, others find it a struggle to think ‘outside the box’. Recognizing and honing your creative potential is a process. That’s what the first half of this workshop is all about.

If you don’t have goals it is impossible to know how to achieve them or when you have attained them. Goals provide focus and motivation. The second half of this workshop will lead participants through goal setting, thinking, planning, and taking action.
