The Cumulative Super Basin of the Rocky Mountains’ Niobrara-Mowry Shale

The world’s super basins have their roots in deep time and their fruits in long-standing, prolific oil and gas production. But that doesn’t mean the industry understands them completely or knows where they all are. One potential super basin complex in the Rocky Mountains area of the United States isn’t even officially named yet. Located mostly in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, bounded to the northeast by the older Williston Basin and to the west by the Sevier thrust belt, it contains numerous, present-day basins including the Powder River, Big Horn, Wind River, Green River, Uinta, Piceance and Denver basins.

Geochemical characterization and classification of crude oils of the Permian Basin, west Texas and southeastern New Mexico

Analysis of 50 oil samples indicate the presence of 5 genetic groups in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. The results of the study have established a fundamental basis for developing play combinations, which embrace genetically similar oils.

The Bakken–Three Forks super giant play, Williston Basin

The Bakken and Three Forks are an important thight-oil resource play and a giant continuous accumulation. Many of the reservoirs in the Bakken petroleum system have low porosity and permeability. Reservoir facies with matrix permeability are key ingredients to sweet spot areas.

The Utah FORGE: An International Laboratory for Advancing Enhanced Geothermal Development

'Conventional geothermal reservoirs are characterized by a heat source, hydrothermal convection, and sufficient natural permeability to allow for fluid migration. Recognizing the geologically restricted occurrence of natural sites, additional opportunities have been sought. Enhanced geothermal systems are reservoirs in hot rock that lack the natural permeability required for fluid movement. In 2014, the U.S. Department of Energy initiated a program to test and develop new technologies for characterizing, creating and sustaining EGS reservoirs under natural field conditions. A site approximately 350 kilometers south of Salt Lake City Utah was selected for the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy, or “FORGE” laboratory. '

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, Petroleum System Analysis from Exploration to Production: Solveig Field, on Wednesday, 23 August 2023, 8:00 AM (CST). Solveig Field, situated in the South Viking Graben offshore Norway, consists of three structural compartments and two reservoir sequences containing oil and gas. Here we show the impact of petroleum system analysis from the exploration stage, (identification of variable fluid properties, occurrence of tar mats), to field development which was based on the process understanding of tar mat formation as a function of the field charge history.
