Pacific Section Conference Soars with Virtual Field Trip to the Monterey Formation

AAPG Pacific Section thrilled attendees with a stunning interactive Google Earth-based virtual field trip. Imagine being able to experience the stunning and intricate layered geology of the Monterey Formation through a Google Earth high-resolution, interactive program. Richard Behl, geology professor at California State University at Long Beach, likes to take geologists into the field, walking through the cool surf and sunny climate. At the Pacific Section virtual conference in late June, Behl offered up what he described as a “Monterey Formation Bucket List” of beach outcrop stops traversing more than 500 miles along the California coast from Crystal Cove and up to Bowling Ball Beach near Point Arena. That was only the start of the multiday technical program that was both innovative and technically enriching.

William Rintoul: the Encyclopedia of California Oil History

The Los Angeles Times once called William Rintoul “one of the West’s most unusual writers.” Oil field journalists are indeed rare and are becoming even rarer. Nevertheless, their contributions are not to be ignored. Petroleum history is a chronicle of the largest industry that has shaped the modern world for the past 150 years or so. There have been many authors of the history of the oil and gas industry, but William Rintoul was different. It is impossible to decouple California’s petroleum history from Rintoul’s legacy.

Characterization of five unconventional diatomaceous (opal-A) reservoirs, Monterey Formation, San Joaquin Valley, California

The diatomaceous reservoirs of the San Joaquin Valley, California, have puzzling features. They are continuously oil-saturated with poorly defined oil–water contacts. The best producers have the best oil saturations. The five reservoirs in this study do not represent a single homogenous group and have clear differences.

A Lesson from Big Bouton

The environment is in your face this year. Here in Los Angeles, we had one of the clearest springs that I can remember. All because the COVID-19 virus resulted in a huge shutdown of most everything that took us outdoors. Come summer and the fires struck the western states. The air turned brown and the visibility went to nearly zero. It stayed that way all the way to summer’s end. This was a huge wakeup call on how sensitive the atmosphere is to changes brought about by aerosols. This brings to mind a story about the biggest tourist attraction in the greater Los Angeles area in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Call it unprecedented, call it exciting and unpredictable, call it historic – and you’re right each time. The 2020 Imperial Barrel Award global finals competition was one for the record books – for the first time ever, the entire competition, impacted by the global pandemic that threatened to end it before it began, was held virtually in early June, adding a new chapter in the program’s illustrious history. Indeed, this year’s competition had many firsts – a global pandemic, an entirely virtual competition and the introduction of the IBA Exploration Leadership Series.

DEG Endorses EnergySource for 'ILiAD'

The DEG leadership unanimously endorsed EnergySource Minerals in San Diego to receive a DEG Corporate Award for their efforts to harness for lithium extraction the brine flow supplying the John L. Featherstone geothermal power plant in the Salton Sea region. EnergySource Chief Operating Officer Derek Benson shared with us that a proprietary process called “Integrated Lithium Adsorption Desorption,” or “ILiAD,” was demonstrated to be the key that unlocks Salton Sea lithium development. They have succeeded in producing battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide utilizing the brine flow as it exits the power generation.

Fluvial architecture and four-dimensional saturation modeling of a steam flood: Kern River field, California

A four-dimensional saturation model was created in the Kern River Field, California. This model allows for recognition and quantification of zones of drainage. Visualization of these results leads to improved reservoir management using salvage completions, new infill drilling, and horizontal wells.
