AAPG’s Energy Minerals Division finds itself in the spotlight these days for its work in prospecting alternative energy sources, such as geothermal and hydrates, for commercial use. “We’ve got good momentum right now with interest in alternative energy,” said Ursula Hammes, AAPG Member, EMD president and president at Hammes Energy and Consultants.

Remembering Emma Giddens

Emma Giddens was a California girl who fell in love with carbonate rocks, excelled in nearly everything she tried, led her IBA team to a Selley Cup victory and even as a graduate student was known internationally for her “pioneering” research. In fact, professors at three schools marveled at her passion for geology, her intelligence, her kindness and mentorship of fellow students. Tragically, Giddens died shortly after receiving word that her research was being honored with an AAPG Foundation Grant-in-Aid.

As I am writing this column, AAPG has just completed its first fully virtual annual meeting – ACE 2020. By most accounts it was very successful. The technical program committee provided a great slate of talks, posters and core studies. The staff placed it on a platform that was easy and fun to use. The whole meeting was a unique virtual experience.

Geologic characterization of the type cored section for the Upper Cretaceous Austin Chalk Group in southern Texas: A combination fractured and unconventional reservoir

The Getty 1 Lloyd Hurt core in LaSalle County, southern Texas, provides rock data through the complete Austin Chalk section to produce a strong geologic characterization. Five lithofacies were defined that can be used to evaluate source-rock and reservoir quality as well as clay content.

Call it unprecedented, call it exciting and unpredictable, call it historic – and you’re right each time. The 2020 Imperial Barrel Award global finals competition was one for the record books – for the first time ever, the entire competition, impacted by the global pandemic that threatened to end it before it began, was held virtually in early June, adding a new chapter in the program’s illustrious history. Indeed, this year’s competition had many firsts – a global pandemic, an entirely virtual competition and the introduction of the IBA Exploration Leadership Series.

Unconventionals Persist, Despite Everything

In a world that has seen rock-bottom oil prices, a sharp decline in energy demand, constrained funding for oil and gas and a worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the future for unconventional resources looks – Challenging. Although, not too bad. That might seem counter-intuitive, but many analysts say the outlook for unconventionals remains positive even as the oil industry goes through a period of struggle and woe.

Anadarko Basin: A Super Super Basin

They might have to invent a new designation for the Anadarko Basin: “super-super basin.” An extraordinarily deep basin, it towers far above the standard definition of a Super Basin – a basin containing multiple reservoirs and source rocks with cumulative production of at least 5 billion barrels of oil equivalent, and future production potential of more than 5 billion boe. The Anadarko has all that and more.
