High concentration methane hydrate in a silt reservoir from the deep-water Gulf of Mexico

Quantitative degassing experiments determine the influence of lithology on hydrate saturation, deep-water Gulf of Mexico. Coarse-grained sediments contain very high hydrate saturation of nearly pure methane in sediments with pore waters of near-seawater salinity prior to dissociation.

Petrophysical properties of the Green Canyon Block 955 hydrate reservoir inferred from reconstituted sediments: Implications for hydrate formation and production

Sediment from the two characteristic lithofacies present in the Green Canyon Block 955 hydrate reservoir were reconstituted to the approximate state they were at in the subsurface. Sandy silts reconstituted to the in situ porosity have a permeability of 11.8 md while clayey silts have a much lower intrinsic permeability.

Seeking the 'Goldilocks Window' of the Austin Chalk

'Sourced in part by the Eagle Ford Group, the Austin Chalk has been a hot spot for operators on and off for a century. The rise of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing brought a renewed interest in the formation, which has produced new discoveries in Texas and Louisiana. Yet in parts of the Austin Chalk, extracting oil and gas can be extremely tricky. Several years ago, the Carbonate Reservoir Characterization Research Laboratory at the University of Texas began a project to analyze approximately 40 cores from the Austin Chalk – the first group to do so. '

Announcing the 2020 IBA Finals Winners

Call it unprecedented, call it exciting and unpredictable, call it historic – and you’re right each time. The 2020 Imperial Barrel Award global finals competition was one for the record books – for the first time ever, the entire competition, impacted by the global pandemic that threatened to end it before it began, was held virtually in early June, adding a new chapter in the program’s illustrious history. Indeed, this year’s competition had many firsts – a global pandemic, an entirely virtual competition and the introduction of the IBA Exploration Leadership Series.

It Is Still Viable!

Josh Rosenfeld highlighted some perspectives on the Paleogene drawdown hypothesis in the Gulf of Mexico in the April 2020 issue of the EXPLORER, a result of suspected isolation from the world ocean during the Cuban arc-Bahamas collision with implications for Wilcox reservoir deposition. In contrast, John Snedden and authors’ portrayed the Wilcox as a period of normal marine deposition, requiring no such drawdown, in the May 2020 issue. Still another concept was presented by Roger Higgs at the South African 2009 AAPG International Conference and Exhibition, that marine isolation occurred but that fluvial input exceeded evaporation such that the Gulf became brackish, hence the poor development of Wilcox fauna.

An onshore, near-shore, offshore and deepwater exploration province that is really a vast collection of basins and geological features.

High-resolution hyperspectral-based continuous mineralogical and total organic carbon analysis of the Eagle Ford Group and associated formations in south Texas

Hyperspectral imaging, used to generate mineral maps of the Eagle Ford Group, is a powerful tool for studying textural and fabric relationships because it detects and highlights the major mineralogical changes that occur between depositional beds and among depositional features.

The Paleogene (Wilcox) Deepwater Play

Joshua Rosenfeld’s article in the April EXPLORER issue’s Historical Highlights provides an interesting compilation of observations selected to support an unproven hypothesis: that the large influx of Paleogene Wilcox sandstones in the Gulf of Mexico can be linked to a major evaporative drawdown of the basin, loosely aligned with and possibly triggering the Paleocene-Eocene thermal event. We offer our observations based on decades of oil industry experience working the Wilcox play, more than 55 peer- reviewed academic papers and one book on Gulf of Mexico sedimentary basin.
