Plans are well underway for ACE2019 in San Antonio, Texas, May 19 – 22. I hope you plan to attend and will consider submitting your abstract to one of the EMD-sponsored themes. The Technical Program Committee encourages the submission of high quality abstracts with direct application to our industry. In particular, abstracts that deal with the most compelling and relevant play areas, both domestic and international, are the most desirable. Submission deadline is Oct. 11, 2019

Southern Gulf of Mexico Wilcox source to sink: Investigating and predicting Paleogene Wilcox reservoirs in eastern Mexico deep-water areas

Source-to-sink analyses show that northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) Wilcox Group siliciclastic deep-water systems are linked to transport of sediments from the Laramide tectonic belt into the deep basin. Less is known, however, about southern GoM sedimentation.

AAPG Hackathon: Interview with Patrick Ng and Andrew Munoz

Deep learning for predicting behaviors is becoming indispensable in the oil industry. Understanding the fundamentals and having a hands-on experience with hacking Python code in order to predict reservoir flow was the experience provided by the first AAPG-Halliburton Hackathon, which took place July 19 in Houston. Led by the AAPG’s Deep Learning Technical Interest Group (TIG) and Halliburton, the event attracted more than 120 registrants who were primarily geoscientists, engineers, and data scientists who worked together in teams that competed against each other and were judged by a panel of experts. The hackathon was powered by the OpenEarth® Community and supported by a team of Halliburton experts in Python software, code, ideation, and strategy – as well as by domain experts and judges from the Deep Learning TIG.

Quantifying sediment supply to continental margins: Application to the Paleogene Wilcox Group, Gulf of Mexico

Sediment supply to the ocean influences basin-margin growth and reflects upstream landscape evolution, including patterns of sediment routing, denudation, and tectono-climatic perturbations in source areas. Constraining sediment supply is useful for inputs to stratigraphic forward models and for predictions of reservoir presence and quality.

As the world heads toward what could be a significant shortfall in energy supply relative to demand, it is more important than ever for our industry to help stakeholders understand the contribution of the hydrocarbon sector in balancing that energy equation. To do that, the industry needs individuals who can find, exploit, and appropriately assess reserves and resources.
