Given the revved-up drilling activity targeting tight gas deposits, oil shales, coal bed methane (CBM) and the like, unconventional hydrocarbons are increasingly becoming conventional. In some instances, it’s the locale that may be considered unconventional.

Gas producers across the northern shelf of the Gulf of Mexico are now targeting super-deep gas plays -- some targets at depths of 26,000 to 33,000 feet (eight to 10 kilometers). To create optimal images of these super-deep gas targets, seismic data need to be acquired with receiver offsets extending to eight to 10 km away from the source.

AAPG was one of the sponsors of a vibrant market in early February in Houston: the North American Prospect Exposition (NAPE). This year’s NAPE, as reported in the March EXPLORER, was the largest ever -- more than 12,000 E&P folks crowded into the George R. Brown Convention Center to show their prospects and plays and acreage blocks to a host of prospective investors.

As the world heads toward what could be a significant shortfall in energy supply relative to demand, it is more important than ever for our industry to help stakeholders understand the contribution of the hydrocarbon sector in balancing that energy equation. To do that, the industry needs individuals who can find, exploit, and appropriately assess reserves and resources. The AAPG DPA – SPE OGRC Petroleum Reserves and Resources Forum will help decision makers better understand the energy resource picture, and help interpreters and investors make more accurate reserve and resource assessments.
