Geochemical investigations of the Woodford–Chattanooga and Fayetteville Shales: Implications for genesis of the Mississippi Valley–type zinc–lead ores in the southern Ozark Region and hydrocarbon exploration

The relationship between base metal deposits, especially Mississippi Valley–type (MVT) Pb–Zn deposits, and hydrocarbons is not well constrained. This is despite the fact that hydrocarbons generally occur in MVT deposits; the ores are emplaced in the same temperature range as hydrocarbon maturation and migration, and the deposits commonly occur in proximity to metal-rich black shales.

Late Mesozoic sediment provenance on Georges Bank: Enlargement of river drainages to the Atlantic Ocean in the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous

The detrital mineralogy of Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous sandstones from the Continental Offshore Stratigraphic Test G-2 well in the Georges Bank Basin was studied to better understand the varying supply of clastic sediment to the basin. Heavy minerals separated from cuttings were identified by chemical analyses, zircons were dated, and Raman spectroscopy was applied to identify titania polymorphs (rutile, anatase, and brookite).

The Emergence of the Helium Industry

Little more than a novelty when first discovered, helium has become a key commodity. It is used extensively in medical cryogenics, analytical and lab applications, breathing mixtures, as a lift gas, for arc welding, leak detection and, contrary to popular belief, only a little is used to inflate party balloons. There are few substitutes for helium and so, as its applications have become more common, demand has grown and supply is struggling to match demand.

A History of the Energy Minerals Division of the AAPG: Part 2

The Energy Minerals Division celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2002. The Division emphasized to the AAPG membership that it was AAPG’s center of activity on energy minerals and unconventional energy resources. EMD originally focused primarily on coal, uranium, geothermal energy, oil shales and tar sands. However, its focus expanded and in 2002, EMD’s most active unconventional resource areas were coalbed methane, gas hydrates, and unconventional energy economics.

I’m writing November’s President’s Column on day 19 after Hurricane Michael devasted the Panhandle communities in Bay County, Florida on Oct. 10, 2018. I was driving from the AAPG Eastern Section Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa. to the California University of Pennsylvania for an AAPG Visiting Geoscientist lecture and pulled to the side of the road to watch the weather radar at 12:43 p.m. as the west side of the eye of a hurricane, two knots shy of a Category 5, passed over my hometown of Panama City.
