Digital transformation, including data management, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence are already at work in many industries, including retail and healthcare. And, many of these industries have learned that there is a commonality in the data collection, management, processing, manipulation and reporting they all do. It is a phenomenon the oil and gas sector has been slow to embrace, even though its needs are not all that different from those of these other fields.

The concept of digital transformation in the oil and gas industry gets talked about a lot these days, even though the phrase seems to have little specific meaning. So, will there really be some kind of extensive cyber-transformation of the industry over the next decade? “No,” said Tom Smith, president and CEO of Geophysical Insights in Houston. Instead, it will happen “over the next three years,” he predicted.

Oil and gas companies have spent years cleaning up and formatting their huge datasets for processing. When that cleanup work is done, the industry will be able to apply machine learning, artificial intelligence and Big Data techniques to extract information and improve operations. And maybe even make exploration discoveries.

Tuesday May 21, 2019 7:15 pm – 9 pm Room 214 A in the San Antonio Convention Center. It is on the Meeting Room level of the convention center. This year we are focusing on how much petroleum comes from come from outside the landing zone / reservoir (and the implications for inventory, spacing, etc.). The first three talks address this issue as well as the problems associated with geochemical techniques that attempt to quantify out-of-zone flow. Alton Brown will follow with a talk that builds on last year’s conversation about pressure generation during petroleum generation and explusion.

Technology has linked us, but we’re not truly connected. And as New York Times columnist and author David Brooks relates in his new book, “The Second Mountain,” the social fragmentation we observe around us is at the core of many of the problems we see.

On April 11, the University of Tulsa announced an alignment – a “Reimagining,” it was called – of its curriculum and identity. It is a plan that will cut its majors by more than 40 percent, from 196 to 112. These cuts will hit the humanities the hardest – and these get the lion’s share of the media coverage – but the reductions in programs and degrees are not just limited to theater, music, philosophy and foreign languages. The school’s Department of Geosciences will also be hobbled when the plan takes effect.

Laura Branch teaches high school science courses and is one of only a few credentialed Earth science teachers in Santa Barbara County and has the only upper-level high school geology class in the county. As a geoscience instructor, Branch is able to teach her students about the petroleum system and the seepage of oil and heavy oil in the coastal area.

As the world heads toward what could be a significant shortfall in energy supply relative to demand, it is more important than ever for our industry to help stakeholders understand the contribution of the hydrocarbon sector in balancing that energy equation. To do that, the industry needs individuals who can find, exploit, and appropriately assess reserves and resources. The AAPG DPA – SPE OGRC Petroleum Reserves and Resources Forum will help decision makers better understand the energy resource picture, and help interpreters and investors make more accurate reserve and resource assessments.
