You could call it destiny – Sabrina Ewald’s family history, after all, is dominated by those who either worked in the oil industry or were teachers. “These experiences shaped my plan for the future, and I always had two ideas of what I wanted to do with my life – geologist or teacher,” she said. Guess what won out?

Over the past year, the AAPG Women’s Network has been working on a proposal to move the AAPGWN from a special interest group to a new technical division of AAPG. The previous co-chair of AAPGWN, Terra George posted an article on LinkedIn which brought attention to the need for a formal transition to a division. Since then, AAPGWN has engaged in many activities to serve the greater energy geoscience community in an effort to accelerate culture change within the AAPG. Only now, because of Terra’s candid letter to AAPG’s leadership, along with the tremendous effort from the AAPGWN leadership and volunteer base, does AAPGWN have enough momentum and leadership to strive for division status.

As we face difficult times with new challenges in the energy industry, we must strive to enhance both soft skills and technical skills, while continuing to strengthen our community. Mentoring programs provide mutually beneficial, win-win relationships to accomplish these goals, demonstrated by outstanding results for both mentors and mentees in organizations and companies that have implemented them. To support our members, the AAPG Women’s Network is launching the AAPGWN Mentoring Program – a tool for promoting women and supporting their career development within the energy industry and related fields.

Exploration is the heart of the oil and gas industry, and geologists are the heart of exploration. Paradoxically, though geologists are among those most responsible for finding hydrocarbons, data collected by the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Geologists shows that geologists are less likely than their engineering and economist counterparts to be considered for leadership positions in the business and technology areas of oil and gas companies.

The AAPG Women’s Network and the SEPM student community co-hosted a panel discussion in October with AAPG Executive Committee officers. While we addressed many of the audience’s questions during the event, we ran out of time before answering all of the important submitted questions. The panelists decided to share responses with the greater AAPG community through the EXPLORER.

Emma Giddens was a California girl who fell in love with carbonate rocks, excelled in nearly everything she tried, led her IBA team to a Selley Cup victory and even as a graduate student was known internationally for her “pioneering” research. In fact, professors at three schools marveled at her passion for geology, her intelligence, her kindness and mentorship of fellow students. Tragically, Giddens died shortly after receiving word that her research was being honored with an AAPG Foundation Grant-in-Aid.

As I am writing this column, AAPG has just completed its first fully virtual annual meeting – ACE 2020. By most accounts it was very successful. The technical program committee provided a great slate of talks, posters and core studies. The staff placed it on a platform that was easy and fun to use. The whole meeting was a unique virtual experience.

AAPGWN Publicity Director Amanda Pascali has created an AAPGWN social media campaign to highlight the #FEMALEGEOLOGIST movement and to increase the visibility and achievements of women geoscientists. The goal of this initiative is to directly encourage and boost female geologists’ career profiles and therefore increase the percentage of women staying in geosciences. Our hope is that the increased exposure and visibility will grant them more opportunities to be seen by their peers and superiors as competent and capable technical leaders to whom future generations can aspire.
