With Shell abandoning its exploration plans in the Chukchi Sea in September and Statoil following suit in November, many might believe that the North Slope Basin off the northern coast of Alaska has been condemned. Yet those who have put decades into studying the geology of Alaska’s North Slope and Outer Continental Shelf believe the opposite.

It has been an interesting and eventful year in Europe for AAPG. With all the less-than-good news around, we felt it was important to maintain a program of events and activities throughout the year. Although we are constrained by the events in the industry we have still tried to match the wishes of the members.

Part of our scientific responsibility is to act as advisers, not advocates for one political stand – either for or against climate change. AAPG needs to be part of the conversation.
