Through his career, he found opportunities to lead, as all good leaders do, but equally important, opportunities needing leadership found him.

Evolving Understanding of Salt Diapirs is Critical to Oil Exploration

Salt tectonics may be “an outlier in this country’s university training in structural geology,” but geologists entering the petroleum industry will almost certainly find themselves dealing with the topic, explained Mark G. Rowan of Rowan Consulting in Boulder, Colo. A growing understanding of how they form – especially since the 1980s – has been helpful in increasing their importance to exploration and production. Rowan discussed “Salt Diapirs – What Are They, How Do They Form and What is Their Role in Hydrocarbon Exploration?” at the recent Visiting Geoscientist Program Super Session organized by AAPG and the AAPG Foundation.

Evaluation of Paleozoic source rocks in Kuwait

The aim of this study is to investigate and evaluate potential source rocks in Paleozoic formations in Kuwait in order to support Kuwait’s plans to increase production to 4.75 million barrels per day by 2040. Exploration to date has largely been conﬁned to the Mesozoic.

Application of principal component analysis on chemical data for reservoir correlation: A case study from Cretaceous carbonate sedimentary rocks, Saudi Arabia

This study highlights how principal component (PC) analysis can be used to establish links between elements and minerals and how PC proﬁles can identify geologic boundaries. By utilizing only a few PC curves, it is easier for nonexperts to identify correlative boundaries.
