World Helium Resources to Enter 'Sustained, Ample Supply'

Helium rose back into the news recently, in part because of drilling exploration programs planned for an area along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border in southern Canada. North American Helium Inc. of Calgary announced it had arranged additional equity financing of about $29 million to purchase and construct its second helium purification plant at the Battle Creek field in southwest Saskatchewan and to fund an active drilling program. A number of other companies are reportedly involved in North American helium exploration projects, including Desert Mountain Energy Corp. and Royal Helium Ltd. of Vancouver, Weil Group Resources LLC in Richmond, Va., and Australian explorer Blue Star Energy.

Evidence of rift segmentation and controls of Middle to Late Jurassic synrift deposition in the Ryggsteinen ridge area, northern North Sea

This study integrates well and seismic data to present evidence of rift segmentation through multiple episodes of rifting and preexisting structure reactivation. It controlled the middle to late Jurassic synrift deposition in the Ryggsteinen ridge area in the northern North Sea.

The purpose of this study is to establish the origin and migration of oil and natural gas and the potential influences of secondary processes in the central part of the Ukrainian Carpathians within the Upper Cretaceous to lower Miocene sequences of the Boryslav-Pokuttya and Skiba nappes.

Slip sliding away: Enigma of large sandy blocks within a gas-bearing mass transport deposit, offshore northwestern Greenland

A gas-charged submarine landslide mass transport deposit above the Melville Bay ridge rift structure has been discovered. The sedimentary succession that deformed into the mass transport deposit was likely deposited within a shallow marine spit complex developed along the ridge axis extension.

When Black Swans Come in Flocks

What a difference a month makes. I discussed black swan events in last month’s President’s Column. Let me tell you, the AAPG and the oil industry just got hit with three black swan events all at once: the coronavirus, the stock market’s major drop and the oil price plunge. While the drop in the stock market and the drop in demand for oil have a direct tie to the coronavirus, the unwinding of OPEC+ has added to the oil price drop. Understandably, the events of this past month have caused an increased amount of anxiety for many people.

We Happy Few

“Normally one would talk about an event like this in terms of recent discoveries and trends.” That’s Neil Hodgson, AAPG Europe president, talking about what happened – more to the point, what didn’t happen – at the recent APPEX Prospect and Property Expo in London. He has good reason for the non- announcement: recent discoveries and trends in the industry are, he believes, an ongoing occurrence for explorationists – it’s part of their DNA. What is needed right now is a re-focus – a rebirth. Listening to Hodgson, there is a sense that while he sees the clouds on the energy horizon – especially in Europe, he is more excited about the sun peeking through them.

Impact of maturity on producible shale oil volumes in the Silurian (Llandovery) hot shales of the northern Arabian plate, southeastern Turkey

The Silurian (Llandovery) hot shales in southeastern Turkey have excellent source rock potential, with an average total organic carbon (TOC) of 5.9 wt. % and generation potential values of 14.9 mg HC/g TOC. The hot shales contain type II organic matter and demonstrate oil and secondary gas generation potential.

Late Quaternary sequence stratigraphy as a tool for groundwater exploration: Lessons from the Po River Basin (northern Italy)

Sequence stratigraphy, typically used for hydrocarbon exploration in ancient strata, can be applied to late Quaternary successions to decipher complex spatial relations among their aquifers. Late Pleistocene–Holocene strata of the Po Basin were investigated using a sequence stratigraphic approach to produce a high-resolution model for guiding groundwater exploitation.
