3PL’s Lithium Find Is a Model for Oil Scientists

“We’re probably at least 10 times larger. I mean, it just dwarfs any other project in North America.” That’s Vincent Ramirez, CEO of 3PL Operating, Inc., talking about a large and valuable lithium discovery his company has made in Railroad Valley, Nev. As lithium will play a vital role in the world’s changing energy landscape, generally, and because much of the known lithium deposits are in Chile, Australia, Argentina and China, specifically, 3PL’s find in central Nevada is potentially a very big deal.

Middle East Sees Major Growth in Natural Gas Development

Mention energy from the Middle East and most people automatically think of crude oil production. But today, geopolitics and supply challenges have put an increased focus on global natural gas resources. Consequently, energy developments in the Middle East are shifting toward natural gas production and export, driven by an increasing international appetite for gas supply and questions about longer-term oil demand. Right now, the bottom line is that natural gas looks like a long-term growth industry and crude oil doesn’t.

India Fires Up Coal Again to Meet Rising Energy Demand

India plans to reopen more than 100 coal mines and restart some idled coal-fired power plants. India is the world’s third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, but the recent power crunch caused so much disruption to the country’s industries that the government was pressured to ramp up the coal industry in an effort to help meet demand.

Geoscientists Protect Vulnerable Populations Against Natural Disasters

This is the story of two tragedies – one in Nepal, one in India – but more importantly, how humanitarian projects by Geoscientists without Borders may help prevent the devastation of the next two. And the tragedies after that. In 2015, an earthquake struck near Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu, which is in the central part of the country. Almost 10,000 people were killed, many thousands more injured and more than 600,000 structures in Kathmandu and other nearby towns were either damaged or destroyed. Václav Kuna, a postdoctoral geophysics researcher was moved to do something about it.

Foundation Supports ‘The Ocean on Top of Our Mountain’ Animated Series

An innovative animated series aimed at young children that tells the story of the Indian subcontinent’s epic tectonic history in creative and even entertaining ways is now closer to reality, thanks to the AAPG Foundation. Trustees have approved initial support for “The Ocean on the Top of Our Mountain,” which graphically tells the story of the region’s 5,000-mile migration northward from Gondwana to its collision with Asia.

The Oil Monarch’s New Clothes

On Nov. 15, 2021, Shell dropped a bombshell: the company no longer wants to be royal. Founded in 1906, Shell has long been based in England, with its tax domicile and headquarters centered in the Netherlands. Now, Shell is moving its headquarters, including its tax domicile, from the Netherlands to London and unifying its share structure. These steps will result in the loss of its traditional label, “Royal Dutch,” which Shell has carried for more than one hundred years. The realignment is intended to allow Europe’s largest oil and gas group to be repositioned.

A philanthropic legacy that was born nearly 50 years ago in the ocean waters of Australia has added yet another chapter to its amazing story – and once again, to the benefit of geoscience education around the world. Marta S. Weeks-Wulf, an AAPG Foundation Trustee Associate, who, like others bearing the Weeks name, has generously and repeatedly supported the Foundation over the past four-plus decades, recently bequeathed yet another gift that will provide benefits for decades of geoscientists: A $5 million annuity gift that will be distributed through 2029.
