Mechanism of hydrocarbon accumulation and enrichment of tuffaceous tight oil with separate reservoir and source rock: A case study of tuff reservoir from the Permian Tiaohu Formation in the Santanghu Basin, northwest China

Different from most tight oil reservoirs, the tuffaceous tight oil of the Tiaohu Formation is not in situ oil, and no close contact exists between the source rock and reservoir in the Malang sag (Santanghu Basin, China).

Lithofacies and depositional setting of a highly prospective lacustrine shale oil succession from the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in the Gulong sag, northern Songliao Basin, northeast China

The lacustrine shale of the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation is the principal prospective unconventional target lithology, acting as source, reservoir, and seal. Lithofacies and associated storage capacity are two significant factors in shale oil prospectivity. This paper describes an investigation of the lower Qingshankou Formation lacustrine shale based on detailed description and analysis of cores, shale lithofacies characteristics, depositional setting, and stacking patterns.

A comprehensive study on rift stratigraphy requires a solid understanding of sequence architecture along the steep margins of rift basins. This study analyzes an Eocene lacustrine sequence along the steep margin of the Dongying depression in eastern China through integrated core, well-log, and three-dimensional seismic analyses.

Climatic and tectonic controls of lacustrine hyperpycnite origination in the Late Triassic Ordos Basin, central China: Implications for unconventional petroleum development: Discussion

Yang et al. (2017b) have advocated the importance of hyperpycnites by using a genetic facies model proposed for deposits of hyperpycnal flows by Mulder et al. (2003). The problem is that the authors have ignored experimental flume results and other empirical field data that discredited the model. This discussion is a rigorous evaluation of data, documentation, and the facies model.

The Energy Minerals Division celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2002. The Division emphasized to the AAPG membership that it was AAPG’s center of activity on energy minerals and unconventional energy resources. EMD originally focused primarily on coal, uranium, geothermal energy, oil shales and tar sands. However, its focus expanded and in 2002, EMD’s most active unconventional resource areas were coalbed methane, gas hydrates, and unconventional energy economics.
